Job description

Position Summary

The CDL Lead Driver is able to operate all lines of business and will be responsible for overseeing a group of drivers to ensure that operations are running smoothly. This non-routed driving position is for training purposes, unless otherwise directed, and performs other job duties as assigned. The lead driver will actively participate in the company’s career pathways program and assist drivers in advancing their careers.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Oversees a group of drivers daily to ensure timely route service, reports concerns to management, and assists in planning and executing re-routes to maximize efficiency.
  2. Educates and trains new drivers on pre- and post-trip inspections according to company standards, reports safety issues, and conducts all necessary training and re-certifications.
  3. Trains drivers to operate CDL trucks safely along designated routes, read route sheets, follow maps, and service customers as assigned.
  4. Completes all training documentation and required paperwork for daily operations in a timely manner.
  5. Coordinates with operations to schedule and complete driver retraining within 72 hours.
  6. Provides courteous customer service, maintains a positive attitude, and exhibits professionalism aligned with company and municipal goals.
  7. Identifies unsatisfactory waste containers, tags containers as needed, and monitors waste for unacceptable materials.
  8. Ensures safety and cleanliness after waste spills, adhering to safety standards and policies.
  9. Maintains vehicle readiness by monitoring condition and ensuring waste is removed from the vehicle after each trip.
  10. Participates in training and learning opportunities to expand knowledge of company services and values, and performs other duties as needed.
Career Path Definitions & Distinctions

Apprentice: Completes training for Helper safety, customer service, and CDL operation; obtains CDL Permit.

Class I Driver: Completes route for one line of business; operates rear load, front load, side load, or roll-off trucks.

Class II Driver: Completes routes for two lines of business; demonstrates improved communication, industry knowledge, and mentoring abilities.

Class III Driver: Completes routes for three lines of business; actively contributes to community and mentors new employees.

Lead Driver: Develops driver training plans, coaches employees, completes routes across all lines, and supports career development programs.

Education, Experience & Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a High School Diploma or GED, be at least 18 years old, hold a valid Class B CDL with air brake endorsement, be legally eligible to work in the U.S., and possess an OSHA 10 or 30 card. A minimum of 1 year of clean CDL driving experience and teamwork skills are required.

Strong relationship management, communication, listening, time management, problem-solving skills, and a dedication to customer service are desired. The ability to teach and train others is also important.
