Responsibilities
THIS IS A HEAVY TRAVEL POSITION!! Candidates must be willing and able to travel 3-4 months at a time within either the eastern or western regions.
- Operate test vehicle/detector car (rail-bound or a modified box truck) on and off railroad tracks in all road conditions.
- Perform vehicle inspections and equipment setup.
- Record and interpret data on computer monitors.
- Service, maintain, and repair the vehicle and detector carriage under the vehicle, including crawling under the vehicle with limited clearance and bending/kneeling/squatting in awkward postures.
- Climb steps and/or ladders to enter/exit the vehicle; perform ground examinations of rails with hand test units.
- Personal protective equipment is required: safety glasses, safety steel-toed boots, hard hats, and safety vests. Safety goggles and neoprene gloves may be required when working with vehicle fluids.
- Required to complete Road Worker Safety training annually.
- Eligible for a $1,000 sign-on bonus after 60 days of employment.
- Working Conditions: All work occurs in the field with potentially extreme weather.
- Safety: Adhere to all company safety policies; report any safety violations or faulty conditions to the supervisor.
- Essential Functions: Operate the detector car, assist crew with measurements and recordings, place and operate test equipment on the rail line, and perform entry/exit tasks via ladder or steps (up to several hundred steps per day).
- Identify: Visually assess car and track conditions, test data, and equipment function.
- Communicate: Communicate clearly to crew members and pilots; use radio and intercom; recognize safety-critical alarms and signals.
- Maintain: Inspect and maintain vehicle motor, body, carriage, and generator; perform cleaning and standard vehicle maintenance; maintain and repair the detector carriage as needed, including under-vehicle work.
- Lower Extremity: Posture and movements under the vehicle (squat, stoop, crouch, crawl) with notes on awkward postures.
- Locomotion: Walk on uneven railroad surfaces; climb steps onto/off the vehicle (up to 300 steps per day).
- Upper Extremity: Use hand tools and test devices; reach gauges; overhead reach with full extension.
- Back/Neck Postures: Manage bending, twisting, and neck movement within full range.
- Sitting/Standing: Alternate between sitting for long periods and standing for task execution.
- Special Senses: Visual and auditory data interpretation and monitoring; assess visual and color signals and observe data on monitors. Vision requirements include distance and field-of-view specifications; hearing must support verbal communication and alarm detection.
- Driving: Safe driving practices and DOT regulatory compliance (logs, weigh stations, registration, etc.).
- Maintenance: Follow maintenance procedures, assist with repairs, conduct periodic checks, and maintain equipment to satisfy RR test cycles and production goals.
- Customer Interaction: Maintain professional relations with RR personnel; document and report complaints; input data into the DCS reporting system.

Qualifications
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid CDL Class A or B with air brake endorsement
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to perform basic mechanical tasks (e.g., changing a tire, replacing a battery)
- Ability to lift and carry up to 85 lbs., with occasional lifts over 100 lbs.
- Ability to squat, kneel, and maintain extended postures
- Ability to crawl under an 18-inch clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 2 years of commercial driving experience
- HS Diploma or GED
