Job summary

Sylvania is seeking a CDL school bus driver to transport students in Beverly, MA, with a focus on safety and timely service. The role follows a Monday–Friday schedule aligned with the school year, including AM/PM and field trip routes.

Responsibilities include safe operations, passenger handling, rostering, and dispatch communication. The position requires a valid CDL with school bus endorsements and a good driving record.

Qualifications

  • CDL with passenger, air brakes and school bus endorsements required.
  • Good driving record.
  • At least one year of relevant experience preferred.
  • Eight hours safety training required each year; CPR, First Aid and First Response training within first year.
  • Patient, flexible and dependable attitude with good character references.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure passenger safety, providing first aid in emergencies and keeping bus in safe, working condition.
  • Communicate safety and boarding/disembarking procedures to passengers.
  • Maintain and update student rosters and run sheets.
  • Secure bus after each shift, checking seats for sleeping students or any lost items.
  • Secure bus at the end of the day ensuring that the fuel level is above a half tank.
  • Follow precise schedules and adjust driving according to traffic and weather conditions to arrive at stops on time.
  • Operate vehicle radio system accurately; communicate clear messages using the two-way radio.
  • Continually communicate with dispatch throughout shift regarding location, schedules and passengers.
  • Maintain orderliness among passengers; follow district protocol in the event of an accident.
  • Complete repair forms and other paperwork as necessary.

Job Description
  • The Transportation department provides transportation to the students of Beverly who attend our public schools as well as those who attend parochial schools in Beverly. Students are bussed daily to and from their respective schools.
  • Transportation is provided for students who participate in school field trips, athletic/music programs or any other school based activity that requires bussing.
  • Our goal is to provide transportation to all students in a safe and timely manner.
  • Base schedule is Monday-Friday, per school year calendar
  • AM/PM and flexible shifts available; local routes, late runs and athletic/field trips
  • Paid time off for all CDL drivers
  • Benefits available for CDL drivers working 20+ hours per week
Key Responsibilities and Qualifications

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms, climb or balance and stoop.
  • The employee must lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include passing DOT physical exam including vision test.
Work Environment
  • Work is performed in a Public School Bus. Majority of the work is performed in a moderately noisy environment with frequent interruptions.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Commercial driver's license (CDL) with passenger, air brakes and school bus endorsements required
  • Good driving record
  • At least one (1) of relevant experience preferred
  • Eight (8) hours safety training required each year; CPR, First Aid and First Response training required within first year
  • Patient, flexible and dependable attitude with good character references
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment
Compensation
  • Compensation is set in accordance with the Beverly Public Schools Transportation collective bargaining agreement.
Employment Eligibility
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a CORI and SORI background check and fingerprint-based national criminal history check, in accordance with Massachusetts law.
  • In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
  • Pre-employment physical examination is required; subject to random drug testing and annual physical exams
