Job description

JOB SUMMARY

All drivers run daily routes with frequent stops and are required to load packages onto hand trucks and unload product at each stop on the assigned route, in the order designated by the Transportation Department Manager. The driver will work away from the operating company (OpCo) at a designated location closer to the customer’s marketplace. This role is similar to an operating company delivery driver and involves direct customer interaction. The driver is responsible for cross-dock model picking uploaded trucks from nightly deliveries at the assigned dock and returning the empty truck to the lot at the end of the route. Occasionally, the driver may assist with loading trucks, palletizing products, and other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide technical support, customer relations, and personnel management for major programs and projects.
  • Run routes efficiently, meeting or exceeding designated route times.
  • Unload products from trailers, using hands or hand carts, and place them in designated customer storage areas, often involving ramps, stairs, or docks, in all weather conditions.
  • Frequently lift, push, or move products weighing 1-75 pounds, up to 100 pounds; reach up to 72 inches for stacking and unstacking pallets; bend and twist constantly while loading and unloading.
  • Verify deliveries with customers and obtain signatures.
  • Communicate with management regarding invoice discrepancies, errors, or returns.
  • Report when a customer does not receive their complete order (shorts).
  • Handle customer complaints professionally.
  • Operate company equipment properly, follow safety rules, and perform pre-trip inspections.
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip responsibilities per DOT regulations and company policies.
  • Organize trucks efficiently for deliveries.
  • Ensure trucks are in good operating condition for routes.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Experience

  • At least one year of route delivery experience or relevant driving background with a straight truck.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License – Class B (Class A preferred).
  • Ability to read and understand English.

  • Operate vehicles in various traffic and weather conditions.
  • Meet or exceed productivity and error rate goals.
  • Demonstrate strong customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Plan and organize work independently.
  • Understand product and inventory control procedures.
  • Maintain effective communication with departments regarding routing, safety, and customer issues.
  • Communicate clearly and perform basic arithmetic; experience in handling money is a plus.
  • Build customer loyalty, manage work efficiently, adapt to changing conditions, build trust, follow up, and communicate effectively.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent lifting of products up to 50 lbs., infrequent lifting up to 80 lbs.
  • Climb on and off trucks regularly.
  • Frequent bending, squatting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Work in confined spaces as required.
