CDL-A Track Equipment Operator

Location: Taneytown, MD
Job Type: Direct Hire | Full-Time
Pay: Starting at $26.00/hour, with higher pay available depending on experience
Schedule: 40 hours guaranteed; average 60+ hours/week with overtime
Benefits: Full-time benefits
Travel: Regional and out-of-area emergency assignments

Position Overview

Seeking a CDL-A Equipment Operator for a hands-on railroad field position involving derailment response, track work, equipment operation, and material handling. Driving is only part of the job—you’ll also operate construction equipment and assist with physical field work.

This is an on-call position with 24/7 emergency response, including weekends and holidays.

What You'll Do
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections on trucks, trailers, and equipment.
  • Transport equipment and materials to and from work sites.
  • Load, unload, stage, and secure equipment and materials.
  • Operate equipment such as cranes, backhoes, grapple trucks, dump trucks, excavators, front-end loaders, rail-bound equipment, tractors, and skid-steer loaders when qualified.
  • Assist with railroad rerailing, load adjustment/transfer, track maintenance, repairs, and new construction.
  • Assist with crane assembly, inspections, disassembly, and operation.
  • Perform rigging using chains, cables, and winches.
  • Use hydraulic tools, welding and cutting torches, electrical tools, and common hand tools.
  • Assist with railroad car maintenance and repair.
  • Perform minor equipment and vehicle servicing and document completed work.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and follow required safety procedures.
  • Help maintain organized vehicles, equipment, tools, and work areas.
  • Support other field or shop tasks as needed.
Requirements
  • Valid Class A CDL with a good driving record.
  • Construction labor or comparable hands-on physical work experience.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and perform manual labor.
  • Ability to pass required qualification, training, and safety programs.
  • 24/7 availability for emergency response, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work extended hours and in demanding field conditions.
Preferred Experience
  • 3+ years of heavy equipment operation, including experience with backhoes, bulldozers, excavators, front-end loaders, grapple trucks, rail-bound equipment, tractors, or skid-steer loaders.
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.
Additional Details
  • 40 hours guaranteed each week.
  • Average 60+ hours per week, with significant overtime.
  • Hours outside Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM are paid at overtime rates.
  • Per diem, hotel pay for travel, and layover pay may be available.
  • Steel-toed boots are required for the interview.
