Job summary

SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University seeks a full-time CDI Specialist within the Department of Health Information Management in New York, NY. You will review inpatient records for accuracy, completeness, and appropriate reimbursement, collaborating with physicians, residents, and coding staff to drive documentation quality.

Ideal candidates have a NY RN license with acute care experience or an equivalent MD/DO credential, plus CDI experience and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• Must meet one of the following educational and professional credential requirements.
• Licensed RN in New York State with a minimum of three years of acute care nursing experience; OR
• Physician education pathway: DO, MBBS, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized medical institution.

Responsibilities

• Conduct concurrent reviews of inpatient medical records for designated populations.
• Evaluate documentation for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with clinical presentation.
• Identify documentation gaps and opportunities for clarification with clinicians.
• Communicate clarification queries to attending physicians and staff.
• Collaborate with HIM coding professionals to ensure complete documentation.
• Apply clinical knowledge to assess records and identify improvements.
• Support accurate coding, quality reporting, and reimbursement through documentation.
• Develop and deliver education to physicians and nursing staff on documentation requirements.
• Create tools and resources with physician leadership to improve documentation.
• Follow up with providers to resolve outstanding documentation clarifications.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and promote data integrity.
