This position involves inspecting, testing, checking, repairing, and repacking parachutes, parachute components and subassemblies; seat survival kits and components; personal flotation devices and components; oxygen regulators; and ALSS equipment. A working knowledge of aircrew survival equipment and applicable explosive devices is required.

Location: NAS Whiting Field, Florida

Principal Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
  • Knowledge of maintenance practices, manuals, publications, tools, test equipment, and operation/maintenance of aircrew survival equipment. Must understand corrosion detection, prevention, and treatment.
  • Perform maintenance, repair, and installation of aircraft life support systems and aircrew personal survival equipment according to instructions and manuals.
  • May conduct Collateral Duty Quality Control Inspections (CDI/CDQAR).
  • Perform duties as an ABO Analyst if authorized.
  • Install and remove Cartridge Actuated Devices and Pyrotechnic Devices.
  • Complete requirements from manuals and directives such as NA 13-1-6 and Air Force T.O. series.
  • Perform corrosion control and prevention.
  • Adhere to FOD prevention and Tool Control rules, participate in walk downs.
  • Maintain cleanliness of work area.
  • Must have personal tools within 30 days of hire.
  • Issue and receive aircrew survival equipment from the ALSS pool.
  • Assemble, inspect, and maintain parachutes, life rafts, life preservers, oxygen regulators, and related equipment.
  • Maintain accountability and inspection schedules in databases like OOMA.
  • Perform maintenance on sewing machines, construct fabric items, and repair fabric closures.
  • Order supplies and survival equipment.
  • Pass an ordnance physical within 30 days and obtain Explosive Handling Certification within 90 days.
  • Coordinate with supervisors and QA on repair procedures and serviceability issues.
  • Assist other mechanics as needed.
  • Familiarize with and document work according to Navy and manufacturer instructions.
  • Brief flight personnel on aircrew gear use and sizing.
  • Follow environmental and safety regulations, including hazardous material handling.
  • May serve as SAA Point Source Coordinator, wear respirators, operate forklifts, and perform inventories.
  • Maintain high ethical standards and participate in additional projects as assigned.
Physical Requirements:

Climbing, standing, stooping, bending, pushing, kneeling, stretching, walking, working in uncomfortable positions, lifting up to 50 pounds.

Working Environment:

Varied conditions from climate-controlled to extreme weather, high noise areas, exposure to fumes, airborne particles, electrical hazards.

Qualifications and Competencies:
  • Completed Navy PR "A" school or equivalent.
  • Intermediate experience as an Aircrew Survival Equipment Mechanic preferred.
  • Valid State Driver's License.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CAC Card and security clearance.
  • Certifications as per program manuals and instructions.
  • Ability to pass medical evaluations including respirator fit testing.
  • Willingness to work weekends, shifts, overtime, and travel if needed.
