Job summary

Vandenberg Space Force Base Chapel seeks a Catholic Music Director to plan and lead music for its Roman Catholic worship community. You will work with the Chaplain/Priest to choose music aligned with the liturgical calendar and lead weekly rehearsals and services, solo or with volunteers.

You will coordinate with staff, direct choirs and musicians, manage selections, and ensure compliance with DoD requirements while maintaining records and a positive music ministry environment.

Qualifications

• Be at least 18 with a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Have at least two years of experience as a church Music Director or primary musician, preferably within a Catholic setting.
• Be proficient in piano/keyboard or guitar.
• Be able to read and transpose music, sight-read or lead from charts, and improvise when needed.
• Understand Catholic hymns, liturgical music, and Gregorian chant.
• Communicate clearly and work professionally with chapel staff, military personnel, and volunteers.
• Successfully complete an interview/audition and provide professional references.
• Obtain and maintain a favorable FBI background check.
• A bachelor’s degree in music is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Select hymns, liturgical music, preludes, offertories, postludes, anthems, and solos.
• Submit weekly music selections by noon each Wednesday.
• Lead at least one rehearsal and one worship service each week.
• Direct the choir, praise team, volunteer musicians, and vocalists.
• Coordinate special performances at least seven days in advance.
• Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise music ministry volunteers.
• Operate chapel audio-visual equipment and train volunteers in its use.
• Support annual event planning, music budgets, purchase requests, and facility requests.
• Maintain volunteer records and ensure DoD and Air Force requirements are followed.
• Attend scheduled meetings with the Chaplain/Priest, chapel staff, and parish advisory groups.
• Ensure facilities and equipment are left clean, secure, and properly stored after each event.

The role

The Vandenberg Space Force Base Chapel is seeking a Catholic Music Director to plan and lead music for its Roman Catholic worship community.

Working closely with the Catholic Chaplain/Priest, you will select music that complements the liturgical calendar, Scripture readings, and themes of each service. You will lead weekly rehearsals and worship services, either independently or alongside volunteer musicians and vocalists.
