Job description

Catholic Chaplain
Chaplains Office

Williams College is now accepting all applications for the position of Catholic Chaplain. Williams is a coeducational liberal arts institution located in the Berkshires of northwestern Massachusetts with access to Albany, Burlington (VT), Boston, New York City, and Montreal. Distinguished by a reputation for outstanding and inclusive teaching and scholarship, academic excellence, and exceptional alumni loyalty, the college is committed to building and supporting a diverse learning community of approximately 2,100 undergraduates. For more information, please visit: www.williams.edu .

The Chaplains' Office:
The Catholic Chaplain reports directly to the Chaplain to the College, who serves as the Director of a dynamic Chaplains' Office containing tradition-specific chaplains (Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, and Protestant Chaplain) and the Assistant to the Chaplains. The Chaplains' Office is part of the Dean of the College Division.

The Chaplains' Office provides pastoral care to the entire College community, offering counsel, support, and encouragement to individuals as well as comfort and wisdom to the institution as a whole. While the Catholic Chaplain will have a particular focus on the religious needs of Williams' robust and diverse Catholic community, all of the chaplains are actively involved in inter-religious and interfaith activities, in the planning and leadership of dialogue and reflection among religious groups and traditions, and in collaborative ventures of humanitarian service. Campus chaplains are increasingly being called on to address issues of inclusion, diversity and belonging. We seek a chaplain who is committed to helping students grow and flourish within the Catholic faith tradition while living and learning in a secular campus environment. A successful chaplain will also be committed to creating space for individuals who value a variety of expressions and practices, and for nurturing connections across many religious and secular communities.

About the Position:
The Catholic Chaplain will be an ordained priest or deacon, a sister or brother in a religious order, or a qualified lay minister of the Catholic tradition. The Catholic Chaplain will guide religious practice and learning for students, faculty, and staff; preside over or arrange for the regular sacramental/liturgical life of the Catholic student community and the wider campus; provide pastoral care; community building opportunities and instruction on topics related to faith and spirituality experiences. The Catholic Chaplain will be expected to build relationships between the Catholic community and multiple stakeholders in the Williams College community.

The Catholic Chaplain will have spent at least 3 years in ministry and have a master's degree in Religion, a Master of Divinity, or equivalent. Preferred candidates will have campus experience as well as at least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). The Catholic Chaplain will be visibly engaged in the whole life of the College, including its campus-wide celebrations and gatherings in times of crisis; this frequently involves work outside of standard weekday office hours – at night and on weekends. The culture of the Chaplains' Office strongly supports chaplains in negotiating their work hours so as to accommodate personal boundaries – but the workflows of the office cannot be confined to a standard 9-5 weekday work schedule.

Williams is committed to enriching its educational experience and its culture through the diversity of its faculty and staff. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. Applicants should highlight relevant experience with building, working with, and supporting a broadly diverse and inclusive community.

Review of resumes will commence on February 17, 2020 and continue until the position is filled.

Employment at Williams is contingent on the verification of background information submitted by the applicant, including the completion of a criminal record check, and education when applicable.
