Job summary

Azspineandjoint is seeking a Cath Lab Registered Nurse (RN) to provide specialized care for patients undergoing cardiovascular procedures in an ASC setting. The RN will work across pre-, intra-, and post-procedure phases, ensuring CMS ASC compliance, infection control, and patient safety.

Requirements include an active PA or multi-state RN license, BLS/ACLS, and preferred 1–2 years of cath lab or critical care experience. Sedation training is a plus.

Qualifications

• Active RN license (Pennsylvania or Multi-state)
• Minimum 1-2 years critical care or cath lab experience preferred
• BLS and ACLS required
• Moderate sedation training preferred
• ACLS certification (required)
• Moderate sedation competency validation
• Knowledge of anticoagulants and antiplatelets
• Knowledge of contrast safety protocols
• Knowledge of radiation safety principles
• Ability to respond to emergencies until transfer if needed

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive nursing assessments: cardiac history, meds reconciliation, allergy/contrast risk, renal function.
• Verify informed consent.
• Initiate IV access and administer pre-procedure medications.
• Confirm NPO status and time-out compliance.
• Educate patients and families on procedure and post-care instructions.
• Circulate and/or monitor during diagnostic caths, PCI, angiography and related procedures.
• Monitor hemodynamics and conscious sedation per CMS/PA rules.
• Assist physician with sterile technique and equipment; document meds, contrast and events.
• Respond to emergencies (arrhythmias, hypotension, contrast reactions).
• Operate defibrillator and emergency equipment.
• Recover patients in PACU or monitored area.
• Assess access site for bleeding or hematoma; monitor distal pulses.
• Manage sheath and radial band removal; note activity restrictions.
• Provide wound care and medication instructions; teach warning signs.

JOB TITLE:

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The Cath Lab Registered Nurse (RN) provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular and peripheral vascular procedures in the ASC setting. The RN functions in pre-procedure, intra-procedure, and post-procedure phases of care while ensuring compliance with CMS ASC Conditions for Coverage, infection control standards, and patient safety regulations.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Active RN license (Pennsylvania or Multi-state)
• Minimum 1-2 years critical care or cath lab experience preferred
• BLS and ACLS required
• Moderate sedation training preferred

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pre-Procedure Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive nursing assessments including:
  • Cardiac history and physical review
  • Medication reconciliation (anticoagulants, antiplatelets, insulin, etc.)
  • Allergy and contrast risk screening
  • Renal function review (baseline creatinine/GFR)
• Verify informed consent.
• Initiate IV access and administer pre-procedure medications.
• Confirm NPO status and procedural time-out compliance.
• Educate patients and families regarding procedure and post-care instructions.

Intra-Procedure Responsibilities

• Circulate and/or monitor during:
• Diagnostic cardiac catheterizations
• PCI (percutaneous coronary interventions)
• Peripheral angiography and interventions
• Loop recorder insertions
• Cardiomems
• Monitor conscious sedation per CMS and PA state regulations.
• Continuously monitor:
• Hemodynamics
• Blood pressure
• Assist physician with sterile technique and equipment preparation.
• Document medications, contrast volume, and procedural events in real time.
• Respond appropriately to emergencies (arrhythmias, hypotension, contrast reactions).
• Operate defibrillator and emergency equipment.

Post-Procedure Responsibilities

• Recover patients in PACU or monitored recovery area.
• Assess access site (radial/femoral) for bleeding or hematoma.
• Monitor distal pulses and vascular status.
• Manage sheath removal.
• Manage radial band removal.
• Activity restrictions
• Wound care
• Medication instructions
• Emergency warning signs

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

• Ability to stand for prolonged periods
• Ability to wear lead apron during procedures
• Lift and transfer patients as needed
• Respond quickly in emergency situations
