Job summary

ExxonMobil is seeking a hands-on laboratory scientist to support materials synthesis and characterization at our Houston-area campus. You’ll operate benchtop reactors, run analytical measurements, and help advance catalytic materials through data-driven experiments.

You will collaborate in a team, apply safety-first lab practices, and contribute to formulation and process optimization using tools like Honeywell/LabVIEW, GC/IR/NMR, and Excel for data analysis and reporting.

Qualifications

• B.S. degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or related field.
• Familiarity with pressurized equipment, pumps, gauges and sensors, piping, computerized unit controls and interfaces, data acquisition, and data processing.
• Hands-on experience in laboratory operations with reactors and related lab equipment.
• Hands-on experience with characterization techniques (chemisorption, physisorption, GC, IR, NMR, DSC/TGA, XRD, SEM).
• Strong understanding of gas laws, mass balances, and basic chemical calculations.
• Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; ability to use software for controlling lab hardware and calculations.

Responsibilities

• Operate small reaction systems and benchtop lab units for materials synthesis.
• Characterize catalytic materials using advanced analytical techniques.
• Support R&D and optimization of catalytic materials with data on stability and surface properties.
• Manage benchtop formulation and lab reactor operations and safety/compliance.
• Maintain reactor systems and analytical equipment; assist with spare parts and inventory.
• Demonstrate clear technical writing and ability to interpret P&IDs and unit flow diagrams.
• Communicate observations, plans, and results effectively to the team.
