Job summary

The Museum of Modern Art seeks a Cataloguer in the Film Department to ensure accurate creation, editing, and metadata of film and media assets within the collection management system.

You will collaborate with Film Dept staff, Media Conservation, and Digital Content teams; duties include data cleansing, record creation for new acquisitions, and preparation for MoMA’s streaming platform, with on-site presence five days a week.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and three years prior experience with film and media collection cataloging or equivalent.
• General knowledge of motion picture film history.
• Knowledge of relational databases, data entry standards, digital media assets and data processing.
• Knowledge of digital preservation concepts.
• Familiarity with file formats (image, audio, video, text) and computing environments.
• Familiarity with TMS and/or other cataloguing databases for moving image material.
• Highly motivated, analytical, organized; accurate data entry a must.
• Ability to balance concurrent short- and long-term projects; on-site five days a week.

Description

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Cataloguer in the Film Department.The Cataloguer will work closely with Film Dept staff, Media Conservation and Digital Content teams to ensure the standards in the creation, editing and accuracy of film and media assets within the collection management system.

Responsibilities:

• Cleans and mines data within the Museum’s collection management system.
• Creation, population and editing of records that relate to digital collection material in consultation with the Media Conservation team.
• Creates and adjusts records and metadata as necessary in alignment with Digital Content and Media Conservation teams to identify titles for MoMA’s streaming platform.
• Catalogue new acquisitions; enters information for Museum archival records, updating records when changes occur.
• Identifies gaps in information, reviewing existing files, updating the Museum’s database as needed and performing necessary follow-up.
• Maintains the policies and procedures for the cataloging of film material in The Museum System (‘TMS’).
• Maintains standards for motion picture cataloging.
• Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree and three years prior experience with film and media collection cataloging or equivalent.
• General knowledge of motion picture film history.
• Knowledge of relational databases, data entry standards, digital media assets and data processing.
• Knowledge of fundamental concepts of digital preservation.
• Good familiarity with digital image, audio, video, and text file formats.
• Knowledge and experience with computing environments (Mac, Windows, Unix/Linux), working in the command line and with command line tools, such as Mediainfo, Exiftool, etc.
• Familiarity with The Museum System (‘TMS’) and/or other databases tailored for the cataloguing of moving image material.
• Highly motivated, results-oriented, analytical and organized.
• Accurate data entry is a must.
• Ability to collaborate and balance concurrent short- and long-term projects.
• On-site presence is required five days a week.

Reports to:Senior Film Collections Manager and Media Conservator

Salary range: Minimum of $57,411 to maximum of $65,000 per annum
