Job summary

American Family Insurance Agency Staff is seeking a Catastrophe Risk Analyst to turn catastrophe model results and exposure data into actionable insights. You will partner with cross-functional teams to influence portfolio strategy, risk appetite, and business planning, contributing to analytics, event response, and continuous improvement.

You will report to a CAT Risk Senior Manager. This hybrid role requires a minimum of 10 days per month in office, with proximity to Madison, WI or Boston, MA.

Qualifications

  • Experience with programming languages (R or Python) is helpful.
  • 1+ years of experience preferred.
  • Experience with catastrophe management software and models.
  • Knowledge of natural catastrophe risk and its insurance applications.
  • Proficiency in database-access scripting languages.
  • Earth science knowledge related to insurance products.
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Perform catastrophe modeling analyses using catastrophe modeling software and data for loss analytics.
  • Develop analytical tools, reports, and data to understand impacts of natural disasters to the enterprise.
  • Monitor catastrophe events daily and assess potential impacts on the business.
  • Evaluate catastrophe software/models and explore industry best practices.
  • Manipulate and investigate large datasets for model development.
  • Bring new ideas to develop business.

Job description

Description The Catastrophe Risk Analyst plays a key role in shaping smarter risk decisions across the organization. In this role, you'll turn catastrophe model results and exposure data into meaningful insights, partner with cross-functional teams, and help influence portfolio strategy, risk appetite, and business planning. This is a great opportunity to contribute to innovative analytics, event response, and continuous improvements that strengthen how the company understands and manages catastrophe risk.

You will report to a CAT Risk Senior Manager.

In this hybrid role, you will be expected to work a minimum of 10 days per month from the office. Candidates should reside within approximately 35-50 miles of one of the following office locations: Madison, WI 53783 or Boston, MA 02110.

Position Compensation Range:

$90,000.00 - $147,000.00

Compensation may vary based on the job level and your geographic work location. Relocation support is offered for eligible candidates.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform catastrophe modeling analyses using catastrophe modeling software for assessing data input, model set-up, model execution, result extraction and loss analytics.
  • Develop analytical tools, reports, and data to understand the impacts of natural disasters to the enterprise's business, including applying a variety of geospatial analysis techniques to analysis projects.
  • Monitor catastrophe peril events in the United States daily and assist identifying the potential impact on the Enterprise business.
  • Evaluate catastrophe management software and models and exploring industry best practices and business strategies in earth science technologies.
  • Manipulate and investigate complex datasets and form data requirements and model specifications needed for development.
  • Bring in new ideas and approaches to develop business.
Requirements:
  • Your experience with programming languages (like R or Python) would be helpful, along with strong analytical skills.
  • 1+ years of experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience providing customer-oriented solutions or support.
  • Experience with Catastrophe management software and catastrophe peril models.
  • Experience with natural catastrophe risk and it's application to the insurance space and catastrophe modeling.
  • Proficiency in programming languages suitable for database
  • Basic knowledge of earth science, property insurance and applications of natural catastrophe risks to the insurance product
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to communicate effectively.
  • Proficiency in programming languages suitable for database access, scripting, and statistical analysis
  • Demonstrated experience using large amounts of structured, semi structured, and unstructured data.
  • Solid knowledge of managing data to scale using data summarization, query and analysis software and tools.
  • Travel Requirements - Up to 10%.
