Job description

Under general supervision, the Equipment Operator I and Equipment Operator II perform general unskilled and skilled labor involving the maintenance and construction of highways, bridges, and related facilities.

Note: Casual call employees may be called to join highway snow removal, paving, construction, or maintenance crews at the supervisor's discretion. Availability at all hours, including weekends, holidays, and extended hours, is required. Candidates must also pass a drug and alcohol test.

The following are key responsibilities; other duties may be assigned:

  1. Operate equipment such as dump trucks, sweepers, tow motors, tractors/mowers, trailers, loaders, rollers, etc.
  2. Perform manual tasks, including shoveling, erecting/removing snow fences, litter pickup, and debris removal; work independently or with a crew.
  3. Maintain, clean, and wash equipment, vehicles, and facilities.
  4. Service equipment: change oil, grease, fuel; perform minor repairs; collaborate with mechanics as needed.
  5. Complete and submit records of time, location, materials, and equipment usage.
  6. Follow safety rules and guidelines established by county and legal authorities.
  7. Plow snow, applying chlorides and abrasives as needed.
  8. Maintain grounds near highway facilities, including planting, mowing, and laying sod.
  9. Operate equipment for filling cracks, patching holes, and cutting brush.

Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or G.E.D. and a valid Commercial Driver's License with endorsements A, B, C, D, N.
  2. Experience in operating light-duty equipment for Equipment Operator I; at least 1 year of experience for Equipment Operator II.
  3. Equivalent education and experience considered.

  2. Understanding of traffic laws and regulations related to equipment operation.
  3. Ability to work in adverse weather and handle environmental distractions.
  4. Record-keeping and reporting skills.

  8. Time management and scheduling skills.
  9. Physical ability to perform tasks, including lifting up to 100 lbs., and other physical demands listed.

Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crawling, reaching, finger movements, and visual requirements for operating machinery.
