Description Of Work
JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for participating in the cashiering functions of the Business and Collections Services Department. Under general supervision, the Cashier receives, disburses, and accounts for large sums of money in connection with the payment of various types of bills and fees, and is responsible for interpreting and carrying out existing policies, methods, and procedures relative to handling large amounts of money.

An incumbent in this position may be designated as Cashier I or Cashier II, depending on qualification, experience, and knowledge of the selected applicant.

Cashier I:

$19.79- $29.68 (Hourly)

Cashier II:

$20.78 - $31.17 (Hourly)

Job Requirements
  • Greet customers, answer questions related to payment on services, provide information and assistance with a positive approach.
  • Open and process daily mail to ensure accurate and timely processing of utility, tax, and miscellaneous payments remitted to the City.
  • Assist with importing of online and IVR payments and posting of drop box payments.
  • Process customer payments for utilities, taxes, CDBG loans, assessments, invoices, licenses, waste works, and other payments.
  • Collect fees for inspection permits, returned checks, parking fines, and other City remittances.
  • Provide backfill responsibilities for the Cashier III position.
  • Reconcile daily payment remittances to ensure proper account allocation.
  • Prepare forms for daily deposits of cash, checks, money orders, and credit card transactions.
  • Provide services to customers in person and over the phone, maintaining courteous interactions.
  • Follow safety rules, report unsafe conditions, and take actions to prevent unsafe practices.
  • Resolve and handle customer complaints effectively.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Research and resolve payment disputes.
  • Monitor and maintain “Cash Items” fund drawer, ensuring accuracy prior to processing.
  • Maintain daily reports of cash processing and submit for approval.
  • Maintain purchase and order logs for specific programs.
  • Coordinate with supervisors on operational issues.
  • Communicate with tax collection specialists for accurate posting and refunds.
  • Monitor penalty fees and ensure proper collection.
  • Maintain regular attendance and work additional overtime as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Stay current with policies and procedures.
  • Communicate with supervisor regarding operational issues.
  • Utilize processes and tools for fraud detection and prevention.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Cashier I:
  • Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a high school level or equivalent.
  • At least two years of steady work handling cash and assisting customers.
  • Teller experience is a plus but not required.
  • Knowledge of debits, credits, and general accounting is preferred.
  • Ability to operate a ten-key adding machine and familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Effective communication skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Must pass a background check.
Cashier II:
  • High school diploma or equivalent plus vocational training.
  • Five or more years of related clerical experience including handling money.
  • Proficiency with ten-key, Microsoft Office, and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work overtime and stand for long periods.
  • Must pass a background check.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Customer service procedures, cash register balancing, and deposit verification.
  • Intermediate skills in office equipment and general banking practices.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to manage multiple objectives.
  • Understanding of customer perspectives and effective communication skills. Bilingual preferred.
