These positions will be filled as a Caseworker I or Social Service Worker depending upon the qualifications of the applicant. Selected candidates may be housed in the DCFS Richfield Office.

Principal Duties

DCFS Caseworkers and Social Service Workers work to keep children with their families whenever safely possible by assessing needs, connecting families to resources, and conducting in-home services. They aim to reunify children removed from their homes or find safety and permanency through alternative options. They work closely with subject matter experts, receive regular supervision, and complete DCFS Practice Model Training while performing the following tasks:

  1. Investigate reports of abuse, exploitation, and neglect; assess risks, strengths, barriers; and determine appropriate actions.
  2. Work with families to create safety and ongoing service plans.
  3. Coordinate and refer services to children and families through community resources, placement providers, agencies, courts, and partners.
  4. Supervise visits between parents and children to ensure safety.
  5. Conduct in-home visits to assess safety and progress.
  6. Facilitate Child and Family Team Meetings with the family and supports.
  7. Testify in court regarding actions, findings, and procedures.
  8. Prepare detailed case documentation, including intake records, investigation summaries, assessments, court reports, and activity logs.
  9. Perform 24-hour on-call services as required, based on location and demand.
  10. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Caseworker I: Pay $23.60
  • Understanding of human development and community resources; ability to provide culturally responsive support and interventions.
  • Professional interaction skills with management and challenging situations.
  • Sensitivity, tact, and professionalism in dealing with people.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license.

Qualifying professional experience includes employment with DHHS, working with youth or adults in related programs, or experience in educational or social work roles, totaling four years, including part-time work calculated proportionally.

Social Service Worker: Pay $26.21
  • Holds an SSW or higher licensure in good standing.
  • Understanding of human development and community resources; culturally responsive support skills.
  • Professional interaction skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree or four years of relevant work experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
Preferences
  • Candidates aged 21 or older may be preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED may be considered.
