Job summary

The GEO Group is seeking a dedicated counselor in a correctional setting. This role provides counseling to inmates/detainees, helps them adjust to facility life, and develops programs to meet individual needs. You will conduct interviews, orient new detainees, and support service access within the facility.

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma, with a preference for a related bachelor’s degree and 1 year of caseload experience. Some roles may favor certified correctional experience.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required; degree preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, sociology, or related field preferred.
  • At least 1 year of caseload management experience in a correctional setting required.
  • Certified law enforcement or correctional/detention experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews newly admitted detainees.
  • Conducts facility orientation for detainees about rules, services, and classification.
  • Provides individual counseling on work, housing, and adjustment issues.
  • Resolves day-to-day counseling problems and refers severe cases to professional staff.
  • Assists detainees in obtaining needed services and represents them at classification meetings.
  • Monitors custody, housing, and program assignments to ensure timely review.
  • Conducts visits to detainees in special housing.
  • Reviews detainee medical status to determine eligibility for work.

Responsibilities
Summary

Provides counseling services, assists the inmates/detainees in adjusting to facility life and obtaining needed services or changes in assignment. Develops and implements programs within the facility to meet the individual needs of inmates/detainees, to include individual and group counseling.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interviews newly admitted detainees.
  • Conducts facility orientation for newly assigned detainees explaining rules and regulations of the facility, available services and programs, and the disciplinary and classification process.
  • Provides individual counseling to inmates/detainees on an informal basis regarding work and housing assignments, adjustment problems, and family problems.
  • Resolves day-to-day problems with counseling. Refers detainees with serious problems to professional counseling staff.
  • Provides assistance to the detainees in obtaining needed services. Serves as a representative for the detainee at classification committee meetings.
  • Monitors detainee custody, housing, job and program assignments to ensure all cases are reviewed in a timely manner.
  • Conducts visits to detainees assigned to caseload who are housed in special housing.
  • Reviews detainee medical status to determine eligibility to work in volunteer job assignments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent certification required.
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, sociology, or related field is preferred.
  • One (1) year in caseload management of offenders in a correctional setting required or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience required.
  • Certified law enforcement officer experience or correctional/detention experience preferred.
