Job summary

Roanoke-Chowan Community College invites applications for a Carpentry Instructor to provide classroom instruction, distance learning, and hands-on shop experience.

You will teach core carpentry topics—safety, tool use, measurement and layout, footing and framing—and prepare students for employment in residential and commercial settings.

Candidates should bring industry experience and teaching or training background; associate degree and OSHA certification are preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma with journeyman or licensed technician level experience (at least 4 years).
  • 3 years of relevant industry experience in the construction industry.
  • Teaching/industry training experience in construction/carpentry topics (teaching courses, training sessions, workshops, or other continuing education).
  • OSHA Certifications
  • Postsecondary teaching experience
  • More than 3 years of relevant industry experience in the construction industry
  • Experience with commercial construction processes
  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes
  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems

Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom instruction in Carpentry and distance learning.
  • Provide practical shop experience to prepare students for employment.

Job description

The Carpentry Instructor is responsible for providing classroom instruction, distance learning instruction, and practical shop experience to prepare students for employment in a variety of jobs in the field of Carpentry. The instructor will teach courses related to the core skills used by carpenters in residential and commercial settings. Topics include safety, hand/power tool use, site preparation, measurement and layout, footings and foundation, construction framing, and other related topics.

  • High School Diploma with journey or licensed technician level experience (at least 4 years)
  • 3 years of relevant industry experience in the construction industry
  • Teaching and/or industry training experience in construction/carpentry topics in any of the following formats: teaching courses, training sessions, conducting professional development workshops, and/or other continuing education seminars
  • Associate's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution
  • OSHA Certifications
  • Postsecondary teaching experience
  • More than 3 years of relevant industry experience in the construction industry
  • Experience with commercial construction processes
  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes
  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems
