Job summary

Akima Facilities Operations (AFO) seeks a skilled carpenter to focus on packing, crating, and related preparation for shipment of equipment and assets under the LRC contract. You will design and produce crates, boxes, pallets, and custom packing solutions to ensure safe handling and compliance with government packing standards.

You must read simple drawings, measure accurately, and use hand and power tools safely.

Qualifications

  • Proven carpenter with packing/crating experience.
  • Ability to design and build custom crates.
  • Proficient with woodworking tools, fasteners, adhesives, sealants.
  • Ability to read and interpret simple drawings, sketches, and dimensions.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and safe operation of hand/power tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality orientation.

Job description

Perform skilled woodworking and carpentry tasks focused on packing, crating, and related preparation for shipment of equipment, materials, and assets within the ISSA section. This role ensures safe, secure, and compliant packing solutions that protect items during transport and storage, while adhering to contract specifications and quality standards under the LRC contract.

Responsibilities
  • Packing and Crating Production.
  • Design, measure, cut, assemble, and finish wooden crates, boxes, pallets, and custom packing solutions for a variety of equipment and supplies.
  • Build vibration-dampening, shock-absorbent, and weather-resistant crates as required.
  • Retrofit and repair existing package containers to maximize protection and minimize weight where feasible.
  • Other duties as assigned within Supply & Service.
  • Material Handling and Workspace Safety.
  • Safely operated hand and power tools (circular saws, planers, routers, Nailers, sanders, etc.) in accordance with safety standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area; remove waste material promptly.
  • Safely load/unload packing materials and finished crates; follow lifting and rigging guidelines.
  • Standards, Compliance, and Documentation:
  • Ensure all packing solutions meet contract specifications, government/agency packing standards, and custom clearance requirements.
  • Apply labeling, tagging, and documentation to crates for traceability and inventory control.
  • Maintain records of materials used, dimensions, weights, and crate specifications for each project.
  • Quality Assurance and Inspection.
  • Inspect crates for structural integrity, secure fastenings, and protective interior fittings (foam, padding, Profiles, corner protectors).
  • Conduct final quality checks prior to shipping; address defects or deviations promptly.
  • Recommend improvements to packing methods to enhance durability and reduce shipping risk.
Qualifications
  • Proven experience as a carpenter with strong packing/crating experience; ability to design and build custom crates.
  • Proficiency with woodworking tools, fasteners, adhesives, sealants, and protective interior fittings.
  • Knowledge of basic math for measuring, tolerance, and material calculations.
  • Understanding of shipping/receiving procedures, load plans, and crate labeling conventions.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and safe operation of hand/power tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret simple drawings, sketches, and dimensions.
  • Strong attention to detail, craftsmanship, and quality orientation.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills; ability to manage multiple crates/projects concurrently.
  • Effective communication skills for collaboration with team and contractors.
  • Ability to pass Pre-Employment Drug Test and Background Screening.
  • Applicant must possess a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued driver’s license.
  • Ability to receive a favorable TIER-1 Investigation results, obtain and maintain a CAC.
  • High School Diploma / GED.
Physical Demands And Work Environment
  • On-site shop and field environments; occasional travel to off-site locations as required.
  • Moderate physical activity: standing, bending, lifting, and handling heavy crates (may require assistance for heavier items).
  • Exposure to dust, wood particles, and varying climate conditions depending on assignment.
  • Environmental Factors: Working in extreme hot or cold temperatures, in all weather conditions, and with exposure to loud noise or vibration.
  • Safety and Sensory Needs: Must possess good, sometimes aided, vision (including color distinction) and hearing, as well as the ability to climb on and off moving or stationary equipment.
