Job summary

Madison County Commission is inviting applications for a skilled carpenter to perform high-level carpentry work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of buildings and fixtures. The role involves reading blueprints, estimating time and materials, and supervising unskilled workers as needed.

Job description

Position Overview

Under minimal direction, performs highly skilled carpentry work in the repair and construction of building structures, fixtures, furniture, and wooden frameworks for structures. General instructions and or scope of work are received from a supervisor regarding work to be done. The employee is expected to use considerable discretion in determining proper work methods. Work involves the performance of the more difficult and advanced duties connected with building construction, remodeling, and carpentry projects. Advanced knowledge of a variety of building construction projects is required. Supervision is exercised over one or more unskilled workers with assistance is given as required.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

(All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)

  • Performs skilled carpentry work in the overall construction, alteration, repair, and maintenance of buildings, floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens, scaffolding, concrete forms, wood fixtures, and furniture. May function in an assistant lead capacity and perform some supervisory duties, as required.
  • Repair and adjust doors, including automatic doors; repair and replace locks; repair tables, chairs, desks, cabinets, benches, cupboards, counters, and other furniture; repairs screens and window frames; sharpen and repair tools and keeps equipment in good condition.
  • Prepares drawings of wooden fixtures and/or structures, to be built on-site, or manufactured in the shop; selects lumber, sets up machines, measures, and cuts component parts to size.
  • Builds cabinets and shelving; builds all types of wood frames for pouring concrete; builds and repairs timber bridges.
  • Figures materials list from drawings for buildings, and or carpentry projects.
  • Erects and climbs scaffoldings for interior and exterior repairs.
  • Performs skilled bench work in a carpenter shop operating power saws, jointer, wood lathes, planers, and boring, sanding, and mortising machines.
  • Assist as needed in other areas of carpentry, masonry, and electrical work.
Education And Experience
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of any level of primary or secondary education that did not result in the awarding of a high school diploma.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship in the trade and/or five years of Building construction and carpentry experience.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Advanced knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, and materials of the building construction/carpentry trade, and the qualities and uses of various woods and other applicable building materials.
  • Proven knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Competence in the use of tools, materials, and equipment used in the building construction and carpentry trade.
  • Ability to make accurate estimates of time and materials; ability to make exacting measurements; ability to read and work from sketches and blueprints and to hear, understand, and effectively carry out oral and written orders.
  • To have a good general knowledge of standard building codes and practices as it pertains to construction and remodeling.
  • Ability to instruct and direct the work of other helpers as required.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability and mobility to climb, stoop, bend, twist and move about in a variety of work situations and locations, including close quarters, scaffolding and at various heights.
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Valid Alabama Driver's License required.

Single Coverage Bi-weekly Premium $ 61.00

Dental Coverage: Dental coverage is included with LGHIP through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. LGHIP manages dental costs and provides enhanced dental benefits using negotiated discounts with in-network dentists. To locate in-network dentists go to www.bcbsal.com. Assuming the services are covered you will normally only be responsible for out of pocket.

Life Insurance: Madison County provides $25,000 in life, $25,000 in accidental death and dismemberment and $25,000 line of duty insurance to eligible employees in certified positions.

Employee Retirement Plans: Employees are required to participate in the Employees Retirement System, which is a Defined Benefit Plan administered through the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA). Participants contribute 5% to 8.5% of their earnings depending on their hire date and classification. Sworn Certified Personnel have an accelerated contribution schedule

  • Employer contribution percentage is set by the Retirement Systems of Alabama and changes annually.

Employee Clinic: Madison County employees and dependents over age 12 may use the Employee Health Clinic for the low co-pay of $15.00 per visit. To be eligible to use the clinic, the employee and dependent must be enrolled in Madison County's health insurance plan as their primary coverage.
