Job Description

The Carpenter II – Historic Preservation Carpenter is responsible for performing skilled carpentry, preservation, repair, maintenance, and construction work in support of historic structures, furnishings, and facilities. This position performs specialized historic preservation work while also supporting general facility maintenance and repair needs to ensure buildings and public areas remain safe, functional, clean, and well maintained.

The Carpenter II works in accordance with the State of California historic preservation requirements, applicable building codes, Aramark standards, and established safety procedures. The position requires knowledge of traditional and contemporary carpentry techniques, the ability to identify and appropriately repair historic materials, and the ability to independently assess and respond to maintenance and preservation needs.

Compensation Data

COMPENSATION: The Hourly rate for this position is $33.00 to $45.00. If both numbers are the same, that is the amount that Aramark expects to offer. This is Aramark’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for this position as of the time of posting.

Job Responsibilities
  • Actively participates in the Historic Preservation Academy and other required training and development programs.
  • Perform skilled carpentry, preservation, repair, fabrication, maintenance, and construction work on historic structures, furnishings, and other property assets.
  • Conserve, protect, repair, and preserve historic furniture, architectural features, and historic structures using appropriate preservation techniques and in-kind materials whenever required.
  • Build, repair, restore, and fabricate wooden items including furniture, doors, windows, cabinets, shelving, trim, molding, muntins, rails, stools, aprons, and other architectural components.
  • Identify and/or research wood species, materials, construction methods, and period-appropriate techniques used in original construction and furnishings to ensure repairs are completed in kind and consistent with historic preservation standards.
  • Install, repair, and restore building fixtures and architectural components such as doors, windows, latches, hardware, trim, and millwork in accordance with applicable NPS standards.
  • Operate woodworking equipment and power tools, including shapers and other equipment necessary to fabricate or reproduce historic molding, trim, and architectural components.
  • Repair furniture, cabinets, shelving, and other woodwork using techniques appropriate to the original period and method of fabrication.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance involving a variety of building materials and components, including walls, drywall, floors, roofs, foundations, masonry, and stonework.
  • Perform general maintenance, repair, overhaul, and construction duties as assigned based on operational and facility needs.
  • Conduct routine inspections of assigned buildings, public areas, structures, equipment, and facility components to identify maintenance, preservation, and safety concerns.
  • Promptly respond to identified maintenance or preservation needs and initiate appropriate corrective action.
  • Follow blueprints, specifications, technical documentation, rough sketches, work orders, and written or oral instructions to complete assigned work.
  • Accurately document work performed, materials used, productive time, inspections, and other required information using established work-order and reporting processes.
  • Assist management with on-site inspections and respond appropriately to identified regulatory or compliance concerns, taking reasonable action within the scope of the position to mitigate immediate risks and prevent future violations.
  • Work closely with the Historic Preservation Manager, Facilities Manager, Aramark Safety & Risk Control, CA State Park representatives, and other stakeholders to identify, mitigate, and resolve preservation, facility, compliance, and safety concerns.
  • Maintain a friendly, efficient, professional, and positive customer-service approach when interacting with employees, guests, clients, vendors, and other stakeholders and respond appropriately to customer and operational needs.
  • Comply with all applicable safety requirements; federal, state, and local regulations; California and federal building codes; Aramark standards of operation; and Aramark's Business Conduct Policy.

Qualifications
  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible carpentry, construction, historic preservation, facilities maintenance, or closely related experience required; experience working with historic structures and/or historic preservation strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience performing skilled carpentry work, including millwork, woodworking, fabrication, repair, and installation.
  • Experience with historic preservation techniques, traditional construction methods, masonry, and stonework preferred.
  • Knowledge of or demonstrated ability to learn and apply the National Historic Preservation Act, CA State Park requirements governing historic assets, and/or other applicable historic preservation standards.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn applicable CA State Park planning and compliance processes, including the Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) process and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements.
  • Ability to identify, research, and appropriately select wood species, materials, construction methods, and finishes necessary to perform in‑kind historic repairs.
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints, specifications, technical documentation, rough sketches, work orders, and detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to safely operate woodworking machinery, power tools, hand tools, ladders, and other equipment required to perform assigned work.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations necessary for carpentry, measurement, layout, material estimation, and related work.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete work effectively within established time constraints while maintaining appropriate quality and preservation standards.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with individuals at all levels of the organization as well as clients, NPS representatives, vendors, employees, and guests.
  • Must possess a current and valid driver's license and meet requirements to operate a company vehicle.
  • Must provide required personal hand tools as established by management.
  • Must be able and willing to work indoors and outdoors in varying environmental and weather conditions.
  • Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position, including standing for extended periods; climbing; bending; stooping; kneeling; crawling; reaching overhead; working from ladders; and regularly lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Must comply with all applicable safety requirements, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality workmanship, historic preservation, teamwork, continuous learning, and customer service.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous professional experience performing historic preservation carpentry on historic buildings, structures, furnishings, or architectural elements.
  • Experience working with federal, state, or local preservation agency.
  • Familiarity with CA State Parks preservation standards, processes, and documentation requirements.
  • Experience with traditional woodworking, finish carpentry, custom millwork, furniture restoration, masonry, and stonework.
  • Experience working within historic districts, National Parks, National Historic Landmarks, or similarly regulated environments.

This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing. This role may also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective equipment (PPE).
