Description of Work
The primary purpose of the carpentry section of the maintenance department is to maintain, improve & up-date building needs for an ever-improving quality of life for the residents of the J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center. The Carpenter II is responsible for providing & sustaining a wide variety of building related repairs for residential, educational & administrative buildings on the JIRDC Campus.
Repairs will consist of, but not limited to, VCT flooring, sheet flooring, terrazzo flooring, carpet, wood & steel metal framing, insulating, E.P.D.M. roofing, TPO roofing, built-up roofing, shingle & metal roofing, cabinet making & repair, concrete removal, forming & replacement, brick/block masonry, window replacement, furniture repair, installing fire rated doors – hinges, and hardware installation.
This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.
Salary Grade NC08; Recruitment Range $37,782.00 - $66,120
Position 60038583 - Maintenance - Monday - Friday, 1st shift (7:30 am - 4:00 pm), work schedule may vary and include evening, weekend, holiday, and emergencies hours (Required to perform on-call duties as primary or secondary on-call staff.)

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

- Documented knowledge of new construction and/or building renovation practices.
- Must have a current valid NC State Driver’s License.
Management Preferences
The selected applicant should have adequate knowledge of the building/renovation practices, including established methods of carpentry trade. Common knowledge of tools & materials required for the task & the ability to follow blueprint, verbal, or sketched instructions. Prefer candidate to have ability to assist residing locksmith as requested with a wide range of tasks associated with locksmith trade (cutting keys, cylinder pinning, etc.). Required training of lock out/ tag out, asbestos/lead training (O&M), equipment safety training.
Physical Requirements
Heavy work exerting up to 100 lbs, ability to work overhead or from ladders, on hands/knees for extended period of time. Meet physical requirements to wear NIOSH approved respirator as required. Ability to walk, stand, kneel, crawl, climb, stoop, & lift. Ability to perform very heavy work. Require visual acuity to be able to perform activities for the job such as operating machinery or performing mechanical trade tasks of a repetitive nature.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and two years of experience in the construction or remodeling of wooden structures or in furniture repair or construction; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Degrees must be from appropriately accredited colleges or universities.
