Job summary

University Hospital in Newark, NJ is seeking a Carpenter I to perform building construction, maintenance and repair to keep facilities safe and functional. You will oversee other mechanics, read blueprints and install/repair components, furniture, and systems across the campus.

Qualified candidates have a technical diploma and at least five years of carpentry experience with leadership in installation, repair, and maintenance, plus strong knowledge of codes.

Qualifications

  • Technical school diploma or equivalent knowledge.
  • Five years of progressive carpentry experience with lead in installation, repair and maintenance.
  • Thorough knowledge of local, state and national codes.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine maintenance on building structural features, architectural features, wall systems, flooring system, ceiling systems, windows and doors.
  • Responds to all carpentry trouble calls and requests throughout the facilities.
  • Inspects, tests, assures integrity of all related building features and systems throughout the facilities.
  • Requests work orders, completes work orders, and issues status reports to supervision and/or management.
  • Reads blueprints, diagrams, specifications, and lays out/performs work in accordance with standards, regulations and codes.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools including rules, measuring instruments, fastening tools, leveling systems.
  • Performs Rough Out, Finish, and Repair work including framing, sheetrock, ceiling, flooring, furniture installation/assembly.
  • Keeps work areas neat and orderly.
  • Adheres to University Hospital compliance standards and policies.
  • Keeps abreast of regulations, laws and policies; performs other facilities related duties.

About The Role

The primary purpose of the Carpenter I position is to perform building related construction, maintenance and repair to assure safe and functional facilities. These duties also include related equipment installation, furniture installation and repair. Oversees work of other mechanics and/or trades helpers.

What You’ll Do
  • Performs routine maintenance on building structural features, architectural features, wall systems, flooring system, ceiling systems, windows and doors.
  • Responds to all carpentry trouble calls and requests throughout the facilities.
  • Inspects, tests, assures integrity of all related building features and systems throughout the facilities.
  • Requesting work orders, completing work orders, and issuing status reports to supervision and/or management.
  • Reads blueprints, diagrams, specifications, and lays out/performs work in accordance with all standards, regulations and/or applicable codes.
  • Ability to use various hand and power tools in the performance of work, including rules, measurement instruments, fastening tools, leveling systems, etc.
  • Performs “Rough Out,” “Finish,” and “Repair” work in accordance with all accepted industry standards. Work includes but is not limited to framing (wood & steel), sheetrock installation, ceiling installation, flooring installation, and furniture installation/assembly.
  • Keeps all work areas in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Understands and adheres to University Hospital's compliance standards as they appear in University Hospital Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  • Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and University Hospital regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
  • Performs other facilities related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
What You’ll Bring
Required
  • Technical school diploma or equivalent knowledge plus a minimum of five (5) years of progressively more responsibility and experience as a carpenter, at least three (3) years of which shall have involved taking a lead in installation, repair, and maintenance of all applicable components/systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of local, state and national codes.

Compensation

In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is OH2000: Probationary Rate: $30.53 - Job Rate: $31.03 - Two (2) Year Rate: $31.96 . University Hospital considers multiple factors when determining compensation, including (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s relevant work experience, education and training, key skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational needs. The expected salary range for this position is in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
