Summary: Performs carpentry work to the interior and exterior components of all garden buildings, structures and features. Some structures are modern and others are historic structures. Constructs and repairs structural woodwork and equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Installs or repairs doors and lock hardware both keyed and electronic and services automatic gates and roll up garage doors.
  • Installs and repairs general office furnishings including: office furniture and room modifications, work stations, walls, plaques and signage, window treatment, shelving, pictures, ceiling, etc.
  • Designs and constructs special projects as directed to include, but not limited to, plaques, special events, and exhibits and various seasonal displays throughout the calender year.
  • Maintains and replaces all wooden surfaces including outdoor furniture and benches and all the wooden structures and features in various parts of the Garden, to include, but not limited to, the Dorris I. Schnuck’s Children’s Garden, Kemper Center for Home Gardening and the Japanese Garden, etc.
  • Installs replacement wooden surfaces and features including roofs, benches, trellis, and raised walkway and hand rails.
  • Installs replacement glass in greenhouse roof and walls and performs general glazing of windows in other buildings.
  • Determines best course of action to make repairs. Sets and/or adjusts priorities depending on room schedules and garden events. Factors taken into consideration when making these decisions include: cost of materials and availability, longevity of repairs, staff availability, scheduling safety while performing work around staff and visitors and resource conservation and green purchasing.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Ensures that all applicable safety standards are followed: informs employees/students/volunteers of safety guidelines and safe working practices and routinely monitors to enforce them.
  • Adapts or modifies work methods to reduce hazards.
  • Reports all accidents, injuries and near-miss accidents immediately.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Meets expected attendance guidelines.
  • Follows and adheres to established policies and procedures, including but not limited to Employee Handbook, Garden Safety Guidelines and Department Policies.
  • Conducts & communicates in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of teamwork, cooperation, and respect within our division and throughout the Garden with all employees, supervisors/managers, volunteers, visitors and others.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. However, at times, individual may monitor and direct job duties for contractors working on site and/or other garden staff who may be assigned to assist on large projects or events.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Four (4+) years finish carpentry experience, including knowledge of construction methods and materials.
  • Minimum two (2) years apprenticeship/technical background in building and furnishings maintenance.
  • Experience with servicing automatic gates and roll up garage doors.
  • Experience with installation and service of door and frames and all associated door and lock hardware.
  • Best lock and key system experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of contemporary office furnishing and systems.
  • Knowledge of the construction methods of historic and contemporary building and structures, construction methods and principles; willingness to keep up with changes in the industry.
  • Knowledge of IBC codes.
  • Knowledge of geometry is highly desirable for designing and constructing special projects.
  • Ability to read site plans and construction drawings and to establish grades.
  • Ability to repair masonry surfaces and install concrete.
  • Must be able to safely operate a wide variety of tools including table saws, pneumatics, drills and other hand tools.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations related to wearing personal protective equipment and working on raised surfaces, including roof, scaffolding and ladders.
  • Ability to work independently with little instruction; coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks, set deadlines, and complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels; must enjoy and feel comfortable interacting and working in close proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner.
  • Reports all accidents, injuries and near-miss accidents immediately.
  • The Garden is committed to the safety and wellbeing of our employees, volunteers and guests. All staff are strongly encouraged to receive all vaccinations as recommended by your healthcare provider prior to hire date. The Garden reserves the right to require future proof of current vaccination status, based on local health department guidelines. When international travel is necessary for Garden business, staff must be able to obtain required travel clearances, driving permits, and vaccinations for all countries where travel is required.

Computer Skills:

    • Ability to use Internet to search for new products and/or methods and to obtain manufactures’ literature and required Safety Data sheets (SDS)
    • Ability to close out work orders using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) computer application. and to keep electronic records.
    • Familiarity navigating through various PC applications including, but not restricted to Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Outlook, Word, etc.).

    • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information to effectively execute and achieve results.

    Mathematical Skills:

    • Ability to effectively perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages and decimals.
    • Ability to utilize geometry for construction or repair projects.

    Reasoning Ability:

    • Requires ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and clean insurable driving record (prior to employment).
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid chauffeur’s license within (2) months of hire date is required.

    Physical Demands:

    • Ability to work at varying heights, on and around glass structures, both indoor and out and to operate various types of lift equipment.
    • Ability to work outdoors for extended period of time during all seasons of the year.
    • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including fall restraint.
    • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and work with various pieces of equipment off ladders and/or lifts and over head.
    • Requires clarity of vision at 20 inches or less with the ability to bring objects into sharp focus.
    • Requires standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching for extended periods of time-- 95% or more of the workday is standing on feet.
    • Ability to utilize computer keyboard (typing).

    Work Environment:

    • Work maybe performed in maintenance shop, finished spaces or in and around general construction conditions.
    • Work is performed at varying heights, around energized and moving equipment, and in all weather conditions for extended periods of time.
    • Work is performed using saws and other moving equipment which may generate dust and noise.
    • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (i.e., in temperatures over 100°F as well as temperatures below 0°F, in rain, snow and other inclement weather conditions as needed).
    • Comfortable working in immediate proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner.

    Contacts with Individuals/Organizations inside/outside the Garden:

    • Members of Maintenance Department.
    • Garden staff in area where work is being performed and during planning for special events and festivals.
    • Architects and/or engineers during major renovations and new construction.


    • Outside contractors and vendors to obtain supplies and services.
