Job SummaryThe carpenter will be part of the construction team within the Facilities Management Department, working on a wide variety of remodeling and new construction projects. This position involves various aspects of carpentry. The carpenter is expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Effective communication and coordination of work are essential, as this role involves interaction with both the public and KIC staff. Additionally, the ability to operate carpentry machinery safely and professionally is required.Job Duties & ResponsibilitiesMaintenance and new construction for KIC FM Department, may include construction and remodeling of commercial facilities structures in the Ketchikan area, including but not limited to:Foundation shoring and retrofittingFraming floors, walls and roofsDrywall hanging, taping and repairingRoofing application (all types)Replacement of windows, doors and floorsInsulationDecking and sidingSelecting lumber by size and strength to suit each job, sourcing wood to suit each project;Reading blueprints and designs to work to specifications as prepared by other construction professionals;Other related duties as assigned.Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities• Ability to understand mathematical calculations, measurements, quantities and angles knowledge.• Knowledge of woodworking methods, cutting, shaping, jointing, and finishing wood.• Skills in a wide range of hand and power tools, saws, drills, nail guns, routers and safety.• Ability to understand and interpret architectural blueprints and technical drawings.• Basic knowledge of building codes, framing techniques, and the principles of structural stability.• Strong understanding of safety protocols and the ability on work safely on a construction site.• Strong understanding and sensitivity to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal culture and lifestyle, working effectively with AI/AN populations.• Effective oral and written communication skills with sensitivity to the lifestyles of targeted participants.• Skills in operating personal computers using a variety of computer software.• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, coworkers, and outside contacts.• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal and tribal privacy laws and KIC policy (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).• Ability to learn and apply program/agency operating policies and procedures.• Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.• Ability to work independently as well as with teams.Working ConditionsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
