Job description

This position is located in Facility Management Service, Boise, VA Medical Center, Boise, ID.

EXPERIENCE:

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/16/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element: The ability to do the work of a Carpenter without more than normal Supervision Examples include: Use techniques for constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness; studies blueprints, sketches, and work orders; fit, install, and maintain finished hardware such as locks and kick plates. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and year ending dates AND hours worked per week. Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Materials Measurement and Layout Technical Practices Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

The employee performs tasks normally requiring moderate physical exertion, including frequent medium lifting (up to 50 pounds), pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, and negotiating confined spaces. Heavy lifting (over 50 pounds) and strenuous exertion is occasionally necessary. The incumbent will require the ability to work in a variety of work sites, including, roofs, scaffolds, crawl spaces, ladders, etc. The employee must be able to distinguish colors. The employee is standing or walking most of the time. Some work is performed in shop areas where the worker is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. When working at job sites, workers may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders. They are subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions. Carpentry workers may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty. The employee uses protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves.
