Job summary

The University of Georgia is seeking a Carpenter II to perform journeyman level carpentry, both rough and finish work, on campus facilities in the Athens area. Work includes constructing and maintaining structural woodwork and other wood projects using standard tools and machinery, with instructions provided orally or by sketches.

Responsibilities include building doors/windows framing, repairs of floors and ceilings, and ensuring safety and quality in all tasks.

Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Experience completing basic repairs and understanding of various trades.
  • Ability to work under pressure and communicate effectively in written and verbal form.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs and maintains doors, floors, windows, partitions, ceilings and exteriors of buildings; builds and installs door and window framing.
  • Builds wooden structures such as partitions, building, office additions, fences, and scaffolds and does sheeting and rough carpentry; operates woodworking machinery.
  • Repairs and maintains hand tools, saws, and other carpentry tools; installs locks, doorknobs, and other building hardware; performs related work as required.

Position Summary

This is manual work at the journeyman level in both rough and finished carpentry. Work involves the construction and maintenance of structural woodwork and other woodwork involving the use of standard carpenter tools and power driven woodworking machinery. Assignments are normally made orally or in the form of sketches or blueprints. Work is inspected for satisfactory compliance with instructions, although routine repairs are usually made independently without supervision or review.

  • Basic understanding of facilities structural components and utility distribution systems
  • Ability to handle high stress situations
  • Troubleshoots basic structural and mechanical failures.

  • Competent communication skills both verbal and written
