Job summary

The University of Georgia Facilities Management Division seeks a Carpenter II in Athens. This journeyman-level role covers rough and finished carpentry, masonry, and building repairs.

Work follows sketches or blueprints with limited supervision to ensure safe, quality construction. The position is full-time, non-exempt, with a standard schedule of Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–4:30 PM and occasional after-hours duties.

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent with 2 years related experience.
  • Knowledge of masonry and building trades is preferred.
  • Ability to read blueprints and follow sketches.

Responsibilities

  • Performs brick laying, stone setting, tile setting and cement finishing work.

Position Summary
This is manual work at the journeyman level in both rough and finished carpentry. Work involves the construction and maintenance of structural woodwork, other woodwork involving the use of standard carpenter tools and power-driven woodworking machinery, and the building and repair of structures of brick, tile, stone, and similar materials. Assignments are normally made orally or in the form of sketches or blueprints. Work is inspected for satisfactory compliance with instructions, although routine repairs are usually made independently without supervision or review.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the masonry and allied building trade operations.
  • Ability to understand drawings, blueprints, diagrams; in order to perform work related tasks.
  • Skill in the care and use of masonry and cement finishing tools.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of: mechanical and electrical building equipment, tools, and equipment associated with maintenance activities
  • Relate well with others (customers, co-workers, supervisors, etc.).
  • Use basic computer skills.
  • Perform administrative functions related to building systems maintenance (complete forms, record filing, etc.).

Physical Demands
Standard requirements of the trades, including but not limited to: stooping, bending, crawling, ladder, and scaffold work, confined space work, lifting up to 75lbs.
