The City of Albuquerque is seeking a skilled Carpenter to support construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of city facilities in Albuquerque, NM. The role requires journey-level carpentry, cabinetry and general construction work across multiple sites.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or GED plus a two-year finish carpentry/apprenticeship and two years of carpentry experience, plus a NM driver’s license and related certifications as needed.

  • Two years of general carpentry experience.

Responsibilities

  • Construct, repair or remodel buildings and attachments using wood, metal or concrete.
  • Perform rough and finish carpentry including framing and repairs.
  • Build cabinets, desks, shelving and display pieces in carpentry shop.
  • Install hardware, doors, locks and window frames; repair glazing.
  • Read blueprints and shop drawings to guide work and materials.

Position Summary

Perform a variety of journey level, skilled carpentry, cabinetry and general construction duties supporting the construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of City buildings and facilities and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essentialfunctions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below. Mustbe able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Construct, repair or remodel wooden, block, concrete, brick or metal buildings and attachments.
  • Perform rough and finished carpentry work from beginning to end including framing of new construction and the maintenance and repair of existing buildings and facilities.
  • Build cabinets, desks, shelving, display cases, conference tables and picture frames in carpentry shop using wood working machines such as power saws, shaper and jointer.
  • Remodel offices in City buildings and facilities; build and install customized shelves, cabinets, counters and other customized projects in City buildings.
  • Install hardware on wood and steel doors and wood cabinets; repair and re-key locks and lock systems.
  • Install and replace glass and plexiglass in wood, steel and aluminum windows; construct complete window frames; repair or replace window frames and broken windows and glazing.
  • Install and repair suspended ceilings; hang and tape drywall and install other types and forms of paneling.
  • May Install shade structures and playground equipment on city park facilities.
  • Install and repair roofs including tabs, roll roofing and Spanish tile.
  • Construct cement forms; pour, finish, and repair concrete pads, footings, walks, planters and related items.
  • Read, follow and prepare blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches supporting the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Estimate and purchase materials with approval and in compliance with City purchasing procedures.
  • Perform general cleanup at job sites.
Supplemental Functions
  • Participate in the construction, painting and repair of park facilities as required.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED supplemented by a two (2) year technical or formal apprenticeship program in finish carpentry or cabinet making; and Two (2) years of general carpentry experience.

Additional Requirements

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Working Conditions

Environmental: Community center and field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise.

Physical: Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; operating equipment.
