Carnivore Medicine Clinical Technician

Location: Raleigh, NC

Compensation: $53,000 - $61,400 (commensurate with education & experience)

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-5:00pm, on-call rotation with possible weekends.

Established in 1983, the NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH) is one of the nation's highest-rated academic medical centers, serving North Carolina and the surrounding region. The VH treats nearly 35,000 patients annually across more than 20 clinical services, utilizing a team-based approach that leverages the expertise of nationally and internationally renowned board-certified specialists. Key Responsibilities
  • Advanced Clinical Nursing & Anesthesia: Administer and monitor anesthesia, evaluate patient depth, and monitor vital signs with ECG, pulse oximetry, blood pressure, and other metrics; conduct pharmacology calculations, drug preparation, and IV fluid rates.
  • Diagnostics: Run essential in-house lab testing (PCV, total protein, urinalysis, fecal analyses including direct smears, floats, gram stains).
  • Program Administration & Operations: Manage day-to-day operations for the Red Wolf program; scheduling, inventory control, purchasing; accurate clinical billing, treatment sheet compliance, meticulous record-keeping; maintain medical equipment and health protocols.
  • Communication & Student Education: Assist in training veterinary students, vet tech students, and interns in carnivore restraint and nursing; serve as core communicator collaborating between the Red Wolf program, exotic services, and other departments.
What You Bring to the Team
  • Strong background in advanced veterinary nursing; experience with wildlife, exotics, or carnivore medicine highly preferred.
  • High proficiency in anesthetic monitoring, veterinary math, and laboratory diagnostics.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a passion for teaching and mentoring students.
  • Physical ability to stand, bend, assist with animal restraint for extended periods, and lift/carry up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

Minimum: Completion of an accredited veterinary technician program or equivalent combination of training and experience. NC Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or ability to obtain NC Registration within six months of hire.

Preferred: Demonstrated advanced veterinary nursing skills, safe restraint of exotic/carnivore species, anesthesia monitoring in high-risk, exotic or wild carnivores, complex medical calculations, in-house laboratory diagnostics, organizational and electronic medical record-keeping skills.
