Job summary

Job Overview

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic clinical scientist with knowledge and experience in diagnostic radiology physics to join our expanding team of clinical scientists and technologists. You will work within one of the largest regional medical physics services in the UK, where you will be appointed as a diagnostic radiology medical physics expert to one or more organisations and play a lead role in the development and delivery of diagnostic radiology physics services to a wide range of NHS Trusts and private customers across the north of England. As part of our large and friendly team you will be supported to further develop your skills and interests and participate in the research activity of the department plus a structured HSS equivalence programme which is currently under local development.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should have a degree in physics, or other appropriate subject, plus an appropriate post-graduate degree at master’s level, or equivalent level of specialist knowledge and experience. Applicants should be registered as a clinical scientist and have experience as a diagnostic radiology medical physics expert (MPE) or be in a position to apply for certification as an MPE within 6 months of appointment. Applicants who have appropriate experience but are some way from being able to apply for MPE certification, may be appointable at Band 7 pending certification. In such cases it is anticipated that MPE certification will be attained within 2 years of appointment. A current UK driving licence and a willingness to drive are essential as the post involves regular visits to other sites across Cumbria and the northeast of England.

Performs a range of advanced healthcare science activities
Participates in the teaching and training commitments of the Service
Maintains and develops high standards of service provision throughout their area of responsibility
Contributes to the development, implementation and monitoring of clinical and organisational strategies within area of expertise
Initiates, in collaboration with the line manager, the development and delivery of research and development activities for healthcare advancement

Band 7 - Salary £49,387- £56,515

Provide highly specialist advice and training to staff within own area and other professionals

Essential criteria

Highly specialist in-depth knowledge and understanding of the application of physical and engineering sciences in medicine performed and developed within the Department, to doctorate level or equivalent
Highly specialist in-depth knowledge and understanding of current legislation and regulations pertinent to working area and the protection of staff, patients and members of the public
Specialist in‑depth knowledge of diagnostic radiology including relevant legislation
In‑depth knowledge of radiation safety, including relevant legislation
Expert knowledge of radiation dosimetry
Knowledge of safe use of the full range of diagnostic radiology equipment and radiation monitoring equipment
Advanced knowledge of working area, enabling post-holder to advise on the appropriateness of techniques, and to collaborate with clinicians in their interpretation and reporting
Advanced knowledge of scientific method and collection and analysis of data using standard scientific tools and software
In‑depth knowledge of human anatomy and physiology
Knowledge of Governance issues including ethical and regulatory considerations
Up to date knowledge of Trust policies and procedures regarding control of infection
Ability to interpret data, analyse problems and evaluate solutions
