Valencia College is seeking a dedicated and mission-driven Career Advisor at our Osceola Campus.

We are looking for a candidate with knowledge of current career trends and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. The individual must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively, demonstrating flexibility and thoroughness in the performance of assigned duties.

Additionally, the candidate should be able to work effectively in a diverse community and be responsive to the needs of diverse student populations.

The ideal candidate will also have experience working with students in higher education, particularly in roles that involve direct support or guidance. Strong written communication skills, a background in providing service-especially in educational or workforce positions-and solid research abilities are highly valued.

Through Career Development Services, Career Advisors assist students in person, virtually and on the phone in choosing and researching careers and majors that align with their career goals. Career Advisors also offers and reviews career assessments to help students become self-aware and identify strengths applicable to their potential career paths. Career Advisors help students with resumes, cover letters and interviewing skills and orient them to the resources available to help them develop these skills. In addition, the Career Center offers professional development workshops regularly for our students to hone their career readiness.

Essential Job Functions
  • 1. Assists students in making their career and life plans based on a review of assessment information, past performances, and future educational and vocational goals.
  • 2. Provides direction and resources related to the research of major and transfer requirement at other institutions.
  • 3. Advises students on choosing the appropriate classes for their major and career/transfer goals.
  • 4. Educates students about the interview process, including: application, resume and cover letter writing, portfolios, and interview techniques.
  • 5. Assists with daily operations of the Career Center, publicizes services, hours, and career materials available to students, faculty and the community.
  • 6. Provides developmental advising related to goal setting, career planning, and educational planning.
  • 7. Orients students to My Career Planner.
  • 8. Maintains accurate records regarding utilization of materials and services.
  • 9. Advises students about careers.
  • 10. Accesses, inputs and retrieves data from a computer.
  • 11. Administers assessments as assigned by Career Center Coordinators, and Counselors.
  • 12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

General Working Conditions

This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. The employee will routinely operate standard office equipment including but not limited to computers, keyboards, mouse, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Typical physical competencies include but are not limited to frequently remaining stationary, moving, reaching, positioning self and occasionally ascending/descending, lifting/moving objects weighing between 5-15 pounds. This job also entails frequently communicating, discerning and exchanging information, detecting and perceiving objects up close, at a distance, and the ability to adjust focus. Cognitive abilities include but are not limited to frequently using discretion, judgment, reasoning, memory, learning, maintaining confidentiality, comprehension, problem solving, and decision-making.
