The Lead Medical Assistant (MA) participates in providing patient care at an expert skill level. They have a duty to provide a standard of care that exceeds that of a reasonably competent and knowledgeable Medical Assistant. The Lead MA conducts training and onboarding of MA staff. The expectation is 50% of time is spent on clinic-specific initiatives that drive continuous process and metrics improvement in their clinic and develop their leadership skills. The Lead Medical Assistant is required to perform all duties of a Medical Assistant within their scope of practice, delegated by and under the supervision of a provider (TX) or physician (FL).

This position organizes the clinical environment and supports patient care, including assisting physicians and nursing personnel, and performing various procedures under supervision. The Lead MA helps identify patient needs and communicates data to the provider or clinical team, delivering quality customer service and ensuring policy adherence including infection control, privacy, and confidentiality.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Performs all duties at the expert level within the Medical Assistant’s scope of practice, including operating diagnostic equipment, wound care, specimen collection, medication administration, EKGs, equipment quality checks, and sterilization.
  2. Spends 50% of time on clinic metrics, projects, and initiatives to support workflow and process improvements.
  3. Identifies solutions to non-standard requests and solves moderately complex problems independently, applying expert knowledge.
  4. Accurately documents patient care in medical records and alerts leadership to documentation errors.
  5. Acts as a champion, mentor, trainer, and SME for other MAs.
  6. May coordinate work of other team members.
  7. Promotes a positive work environment as a culture ambassador.
  8. Coordinates patient care as directed by the provider and policies.
  9. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  10. Organizes exam and treatment rooms, stocks supplies, and ensures infection prevention standards.
  11. Performs screening and supports delegated orders.
  12. Ensures ongoing training for MAs to improve performance.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current BLS certification for healthcare providers.
  • 5+ years as a certified MA or 7+ years combined certified and non-certified experience, with at least 3 years certified.
  • Demonstrated leadership, knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10 and CPT coding, intermediate Excel, and electronic health record proficiency.
  • Proven mentoring, calmness in emergencies, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Flexibility, driver’s license, reliable transportation, and ability to travel up to 90% within the Texas area.
  • Proof of immunity to certain diseases or vaccination documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of lead or supervisory experience.
  • Bilingual abilities.

Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to lift >35 lbs with assistance, stand for long periods, operate equipment, receive instructions, problem-solve, and handle exposure to communicable diseases.
