Job description

Job Description: Care Attendant

Provides limited patient care, support, and observation services in accordance with established policies and procedures. May be directed by the nurse or physician to ensure the highest quality of patient care. Responsibilities include continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients, verbal redirection, alerting nursing staff as needed, and performing core responsibilities such as observation, hygiene (bath and oral care), bed making, transfer assistance, and comfort measures.

Responsibilities:
  1. Professional Growth: Receive feedback constructively, identify learning needs, seek assistance, participate in self-review, and take actions to improve skills and performance.
  2. Patient Observation: Maintain visual observation of patients at all times and use digital communication devices for verbal redirection and assistance requests.
  3. Transformational Leadership: Support departmental changes, view problems as challenges, and contribute to efficient functioning.
  4. Communication & Handoff: Participate in information hand-offs and coordinate coverage for breaks.
  5. Care Delivery: Assist with activities of daily living, maintain a safe environment, and manage supplies and equipment.
  6. Collaborative Practice: Report equipment issues, communicate effectively, and foster respectful relationships.
  7. Patient and Self-Care: Respond promptly to patient needs, support safety, and develop professional relationships.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent, successful completion of UPMC Care Attendant-Telesitter training, knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques, effective communication skills, and at least one year of hospital experience preferred.

Licensure & Certifications: CPR or BLS certification required within 30 days of hire, based on AHA standards.
