Job summary

UNM Hospitals in Albuquerque, NM seeks an Electrocardiographic Technician to operate EKG and patient monitoring equipment, recording heart activity and performing non-invasive tests across a range of age groups.

You will ensure adherence to hospital policies, instruct patients, obtain requisitions, submit results, and participate in safety and quality assurance activities while supporting on-site care.

Qualifications

  • High School or GED Equivalent
  • UNM Hospitals Basic Arrhythmia Challenge Test within 90 days
  • 1 year directly related experience
  • CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers within 30 days

Responsibilities

  • Perform EKG, holter monitors, ambulatory blood pressure machines and event monitors; instruct patients on usage of monitoring equipment.
  • Obtain test and patient information from patient requisition forms; submit test results to physician for interpretation.
  • Answer phone, receive event recorder transmissions and operate computer systems.
  • Deliver test results, perform quality assurance reports for monitor room and complete patient billing.
  • Interpret, document and mount EKG rhythm strips; monitor designated patients throughout the institution and notify appropriate personnel of changes and life threatening rhythms.
  • Maintain equipment, stock supplies and transport patients.
  • Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes.
  • Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk.
  • Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner.
  • Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may not seem right.

Position Summary

Operate electrocardiographic machine and patient monitoring equipment to record electromotive variations and impulses of the heart. Perform non-invasive procedures, electrocardiograms, holter monitors, event recorders and ambulatory blood pressure machines for diagnosis of Coronary Artery Disease. Monitor designated patients throughout the institution and notifies appropriate personnel as required. Instruct patients on usage of monitoring equipment. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignments may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.

Credentials

Physical Conditions

  • Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Working Conditions

  • Med Haz: Dirt, dust, fumes, odors, bad weather, noise
  • May be required or is required to perform on-call duties
  • May work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends
  • TB testing is completed upon hire and additionally as required
