Job summary

UNC Health is seeking a Cardiac Sonographer to perform cardiac ultrasound and vascular imaging in a large academic medical center. You will deliver safe patient care, operate ultrasound systems, and participate in ongoing quality improvement.

The role requires ARDMS/CCI certification or registry eligibility, an associate degree in Sonography or related field, and at least one year of acute hospital experience. Day shift, onsite in Chapel Hill, NC with a 40-hour work week.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in Sonography or Radiology or related field.
• Completion of a 12-month ultrasound program.
• ARDMS/CCI certification or registry eligibility with 1-year registration target.

Responsibilities

• Deliver pre- and post-procedure patient care including assessments and CPR.
• Operate and maintain ultrasound equipment; record and monitor QA.
• Generate cardiac ultrasound images and vascular studies as needed.
• Provide education to staff; serve as a resource to Cardiovascular Sonographers.
• Document patient data and prepare reports for charge entry.

Summary

Employs radiologic sciences technology to perform a variety of patient care, technical, and diagnostic tasks targeted to the care of patients with cardiovascular disease. Major tasks include ultrasound imaging, patient preparation and post procedure care, procedure room set-up and cleaning, technical reporting, and quality monitoring. Provides cardiac ultrasound in one of the nation's leading academic medical centers. Serves a diverse group of inpatients and outpatients on a dynamic team dedicated to continuing education, professional growth, and high-quality patient care.

Hours: Monday - Friday; shift starts at 7:30am (can either work four 10 hr shifts or five 8 hr shifts); Call on day per week and one weekend per 2-3 months

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates competence in delivering pre-procedure and post-procedure patient care including, but not limited to patient assessment pre- and post-procedure care and, emergency cardiac care (CPR is required). Additionally, assistance with post-procedure transport may be required.
• Ensures equipment is calibrated and properly maintained on a daily basis. Performs and records all equipment maintenance and quality assurance monitoring. Troubleshoots and identifies any equipment problems and reports to appropriate supervisor or biomedical engineering.
• Generates ultrasound images of the heart and/or vascular related structures. Performs advanced cardiac ultrasound studies in care of patients with complex conditions and regularly performs multiple study types with varied anatomical areas.
• Performs vascular studies and real time readings/reports in the operating room for invasive and non-invasive vascular procedures.
• Performs studies for inpatient neonatal/NICU and pediatric patients.
• May perform staff training and education. Serves as a subject matter expert and resource to Cardiovascular Sonographers.
• Monitors and records patient information and maintains report storage and data systems. Compiles and enters data necessary for charge entry and prepares reports. Also responsible for retrieval of stored information and reports from the automated storage system.
• Prepares procedure room and equipment for daily use and is responsible for timely and efficient room preparation between procedures.
• Independently responds to on-call needs for emergent procedures.
• Performs cardiac ultrasound evaluations
• Attends weekly department educational conferences
• Communicates urgent exam findings to Cardiologist and routes studies for interpretation
• Obtains pertinent patient health history prior to examination
• Prepares procedure room and maintains equipment
• Identifies and reports any equipment issues
• May be asked to help teach students, fellow cardiologists, and co-workers

Education Requirements

• Associate’s degree in Sonography, Radiology or a related field within 3 months of hire, OR Completion of a twelve (12) month ultrasound program within 3 months of hire.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

• Registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), or registry eligible and become registered within one (1) year from date of hire. Must maintain registry status and continuing education requirements annually.

Professional Experience Requirements

• One year minimum experience in acute hospital setting.
