The University of Florida Department of Anesthesiology is seeking Cardiothoracic Anesthesia-trained anesthesiologists to join our esteemed team in Gainesville, FL – a sunny, dynamic, and family-friendly city.

The Opportunity

  • Join a dynamic and growing academic cardiothoracic division with a fellowship program.
  • Collaborate closely with the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery to provide the highest quality patient care available in a collegial, team-oriented environment.

  • Provide anesthesia care for a variety of adult cardiac and thoracic surgical cases, including:
    • Open heart surgery, including adult cardiopulmonary bypass cases (over 600 cases annually)
    • Structural heart procedures (e.g., TAVR)
    • Ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation, including bi-ventricular cardiac assist devices used for destination therapy or as a bridge to transplantation/recovery
    • 20–30 adult heart transplants annually
    • Heart and lung transplantation
  • Provide specialized care for patients who refuse blood products during major cardiac or thoracic procedures for religious or personal reasons.
  • Teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and other trainees.
  • Engage in clinical and translational research, with opportunities for academic and leadership growth.

  • The Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Division includes a team of highly skilled faculty working in collaboration with UF’s renowned cardiovascular surgery programs.
  • UF Health is the second-busiest aortic center in the nation, offering exceptional case volume and complexity.
  • Faculty provide care at UF Health Shands Hospital, a quaternary-care academic center ranked among the nation’s best.
  • UF Health is one of the few centers in Florida offering surgically implanted bi-ventricular assist devices, either as destination therapy or a bridge to transplant/recovery.
  • The division is a referral destination for patients who decline blood transfusions, offering highly individualized, safe care for those with specific religious beliefs or medical preferences.

Minimum Requirements:

  • MD, DO, or equivalent.
  • ABA board certification or eligibility in Anesthesiology.
  • Completion of a residency in Anesthesiology.
  • Fellowship training in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology.
  • Credentials to obtain a State of Florida physician's license.
