Job summary

OSF HealthCare in Bloomington, Illinois, seeks an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery team. You will work with surgeons and ICU staff, perform first assist duties, round on patients, and manage perioperative care in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements include IL APN/PA licensure, ACNP certification for NPs, BLS/ACLS, and prescriptive authority. The role offers 8–10 hour days with call rotation.

Qualifications

  • Licensed to provide APN or PA services in IL per state regulations.
  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioner certification required for NPs.
  • DEA and IL prescriptive authority as applicable.
  • BLS/ACLS certified.
  • ACNP certification required.
  • Eligible to participate in Medicare/Medicaid and other programs.
  • Must meet OSF malpractice and liability coverage qualifications.

Responsibilities

Overview

The Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery plays an integral role in the comprehensive care of adult cv surgical patients. This provider works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high quality perioperative care. Responsibilities include inpatient rounding, first assisting in the operating room, managing pre and postoperative patients, and participating in call coverage.

  • Serve as first assist in cardiothoracic and vascular surgical procedures, including CABG, valve surgery, aortic procedures, and other operations. Perform surgical tasks such as vein harvesting, suturing, retraction, cannulation assistance, and hemostasis.
  • Support preoperative preparation and postoperative handoff to ICU teams.
  • Perform daily rounds on postoperative and step down patients.
  • Manage routine and complex postoperative issues, including hemodynamic monitoring, chest tube management, wound care, and medication adjustments.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, labs, imaging, and consults.
  • Coordinate patient care with nursing, case management, rehabilitation, and other specialties.
  • 8 to 10-hour day shifts, participate in shared call rotation and support OR call needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Licensed to provide either advanced practice nursing services in the State of Illinois as issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation in accordance with the Illinois Nurse Practice Act OR physician assistant services as issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation in accordance with the Illinois Physician Assistant Practice Act of 1987.
  • Nurse Practitioners must hold a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner certification from the National Certification Corporation
  • Licensed by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the State of Illinois to prescribe narcotics, if applicable.
  • BLS/ACLS Certified.
  • Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP).
  • Must be eligible as a provider for Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal health programs.
  • Provider shall meet all qualifications to participate in OSF's programs for professional malpractice and other liability coverage.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care aligned to the preferences, goals, and needs of the patients served. A minimum of 2 years of cardiothoracic, cardiovascular, or critical care experience is preferred. First Assist or inpatient/ICU experience as an APP is preferred.
