Job description

The practice of ultrasonography is performed by an ultrasound technologist responsible for administering high-frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques to patients of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for medical purposes. A Sonographer/Technologist performs ultrasonography procedures and related techniques, producing images for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. Ultrasonography combines scientific knowledge, technical skills, patient interaction, and compassionate care to generate diagnostic information. A Sonographer/Technologist recognizes patient conditions essential for successful procedure completion.

The Sonographer/Technologists must demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. They recognize patient conditions critical for successful procedures and exercise independent professional and ethical judgment. They serve as the primary liaison between patients, licensed independent practitioners, and other support team members. Sensitivity to patients' physical and emotional needs, effective communication, assessment, monitoring, and care skills are essential. Participation in quality improvement and ongoing performance assessment is expected.

Sonographer/Technologists think critically and use independent, professional, and ethical judgment in all work aspects. Engagement in continuing education to enhance patient care, public education, knowledge, and technical skills is required.

The scope of practice includes:

  1. Performing diagnostic ultrasound procedures upon the order of or for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner (LIP).
  2. Determining ultrasonic frequencies and appropriate transducers for the anatomical area.
  3. Maintaining records, respecting confidentiality, and following policies.
  4. Applying patient safety principles during procedures, including assisting and transporting patients.
  5. Receiving, relaying, and documenting imaging orders in the medical record.
  6. Corroborating clinical history with the procedure and ensuring documentation is available for the LIP.
  7. Verifying informed consent.
  8. Assuming responsibility for patient needs before, during, and after procedures.
  9. Preparing patients for procedures.
  10. Applying ALARA principles to minimize exposure.
  11. Performing venipuncture and starting/maintaining IV access as applicable.
  12. Identifying and escalating emergency situations until appropriate team arrives.
  13. Providing patient education related to imaging procedures.
  14. Mentoring students and learners in the radiology environment.
  15. Participating in quality assurance activities.

Essential Job Statements

Performing or assisting with ultrasound imaging exams independently or with minimal assistance, adhering to physician orders, protocols, and safety standards. Representing the goals and values of VCU Health System. Ensuring compliance with standards and resolving basic service issues.

Additional position requirements: Shift schedules are established with the manager; may include weekends and after-hours based on workload. Considered 'Essential Employees' and may be required to report to work as per policy.

Patient Population

Providing equitable care appropriate to patients' ages, including infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Demonstrating knowledge of growth and development principles, assessing patient data, and interpreting information to meet individual needs.

Employment Qualifications

Required Education: Graduation from an accredited program in cardiac sonography, or a recognized 2-year JRC accredited program, or a bachelor's degree in cardiac sonography.

Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in cardiac sonography.

Licensure/Certification Required: Certification by ARDMS (RDCS) or CCI in cardiac sonography. For new graduates, eligibility for certification within 12 months and passing within 6 months of eligibility.

Minimum Qualifications: Less than 12 months of experience.

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift, push, and perform physical tasks as detailed, with exposure to various hazards. Ability to work sitting, standing, walking, and in various physical environments.

Additional Physical Requirements/Hazards

Manual dexterity, shift work, maneuvering patients, hearing alarms, reaching, repetitive movements, visual acuity, and exposure to various risks.

Mental/Sensory - Emotional

Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, communication skills, and the ability to handle a fast-paced, changing environment.

Rotating shifts may be required.
