Job summary

Tampa General Hospital seeks a focused Telemetry Technician to monitor patients’ cardiac rhythms, perform 12-lead EKGs, and document findings per policy. The role supports ER flow, transfers, and patient safety with attention to alarm management and accurate patient identification.

Requirements include a High School Diploma or GED and BLS certification. Prior EKG training or competency is expected to ensure reliable rhythm interpretation and team communication.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Interpret rhythm changes accurately and promptly.
• Record rhythm strips as required and ensure correct labeling.
• Demonstrate arrhythmia recognition and escalate as needed.
• Notify nursing staff of lethal arrhythmias and document strips.
• Maintain alarms on at safe rates to minimize false alarms.
• Identify EKGs with proper patient identifiers.
• Operate the computer system and support ER flow, admissions and transfers.
• Answer phones/intercom professionally and relay messages quickly and accurately.

Description

Under general supervision, follows established policies, procedures, and professional guidelines. Responsible for monitoring and identifying basic normal cardiac rhythms, dysrhythmias, and lethal arrhythmias; reporting these findings to the appropriate personnel, and rhythm documentation and labeling per TGH policy. Promotes and maintains patient support including but not limited to: interprets and post rhythm strips and protocol, performs 12 lead EKGs. Maintain and clean portable telemetry monitors between patient use according to manufacturer's guidelines.

Essential Functions

• Accurately interprets changes in rhythms.
• Records rhythm strips as required.
• Demonstrates arrhythmia recognition skills.
• Communicates lethal arrhythmias to nursing staff and documents strips as requested.
• Maintains alarms on at all times with rates set safely to minimize false alarms.
• Identifies individual EKGs with proper patient identifiers.
• Works with the computer system, including Maintains flow through the ER and facilitatetransfers, admissions and discharges timely.
• Answers telephone and intercom in a pleasant and professional manner and relays messageaccurately and quickly.
• Reports any malfunction of monitoring equipment to the Biomedical Technicians, ChargeNurse, and Nursing Director
