The Department of Anesthesiology at Inova Fairfax Hospital is looking for a dedicated Cardiac Intensivist / CV Anesthesiologist to join the team to provide services in the CardioVascular ICU (CVICU) and on the Anesthesiology service. The prospective candidate will join a collaborative team of more than 30 specialized intensivists in the Medical Critical Care Service at Inova Fairfax Medical Center and a nationally recognized group of anesthesiologists and cardiac anesthesia practice. This position will be employed by NorthStar Anesthesia.
Anesthesiology Features:
- 50% of time providing anesthesia for a variety of surgical procedures depending on training (e.g., Cardiac OR vs. General OR). Cases may include major vascular, OB/GYN, healthy pediatrics, neuro, urology, ambulatory, thoracic, orthopedic, ENT, as well as ultrasound-guided nerve blocks and major cardiac procedures such as heart and lung transplants, major aortic, minimally invasive surgery, adult congenital, structural heart, CABG, and valve surgeries.
- Participate in call rotation.
- Work with a team of 55+ anesthesiologists (Cardiac, Pediatric, Obstetric, and Pain trained).
- Solo or care team model with CRNAs.
- Academic appointment opportunities available through the University of Virginia, including opportunities to work with medical students and residents (UVA and Walter Reed), cardiothoracic fellows (Johns Hopkins).
Critical Care Features:
- 50% of time providing critical care coverage for a high-volume inpatient heart center in the surgical and medical cardiac ICUs. Coverage will include mechanical circulatory support devices, pre- and post-heart and lung transplant care, adult congenital physiology, post-percutaneous valve interventions, and post-surgical cardiac cases.

Requirements:
- Work schedule: Split position with Critical Care and Anesthesia, 5 FTE in CVICU and 0.5 FTE with Anesthesia.
- Education: MD or DO from an accredited university medical school, completed ACGME residency training and fellowship.
- ABMS board certification / eligibility in critical care.
- ABA certification in Anesthesiology.
- Advanced PTE exam required for cardiac anesthesiologists.
- Cardiac Anesthesia ABA certification preferred but not required.
- Experience: Fellowship training or experience as an attending with critically ill cardiac and cardiovascular patients is required.
- Licensure: Current or eligibility for an unrestricted Virginia state medical license and DEA.
Compensation:
- Starting salary comparable with anesthesiologists, with escalation based on time.
- The base salary does not include a recruitment bonus, yearly quality and performance incentives, extra shift / OT incentives, and possible leadership position stipend.
- Salaried position; compensation is not directly dependent on individual critical care or anesthesia billing.
