The Cardiac ICU (CICU) or Coronary ICU (CCU) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a 15-bed ICU specializing in care for patients with cardiogenic shock, myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrhythmias, and cardiac arrest. The nursing staff are highly skilled in caring for critically ill patients and are trained in managing devices such as Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, Impella, and LVADs, along with critical care lines and interventions like Swan-Ganz catheters, arterial lines, central lines, ventilators, dialysis, and temperature management.
Our CICU team includes Cardiology Attendings, Fellows, Residents, Registered Nurses, Pharmacists, Patient Care Technicians, Unit Secretaries, Respiratory Therapists, Case Managers, and Social Workers. We follow a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to ensure excellent patient and family care. Nurse-to-patient ratios are typically 1:2 or 1:1, depending on acuity.
Provides multi-skilled, direct patient care under supervision of a registered nurse. Requires completion of a foundational nursing skills course or equivalent (fundamentals, foundations, or adult/peds health).
