Job summary

Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium is seeking a Cardiac Device Nurse (RN) to independently manage and coordinate care for patients with implanted cardiac devices, including pacemakers and ICDs. The RN will collaborate with Cardiologists, Cardiology APPs, and other clinical staff to optimize device therapy and patient outcomes.

Responsibilities include performing device interrogations, monitoring in inpatient and outpatient settings, and coordinating remote monitoring.

Qualifications

• RN license in Alaska (or eligible)
• Two years in a cardiac setting (EP/ICU/Cath lab) preferred
• ASN required; BSN preferred for advancement

Responsibilities

• Conduct interviews to obtain medical history and care plan understanding.
• Perform CIED interrogation and device/patient monitoring per cardiology orders.
• Identify malfunctions and adjust care and follow-up with teams.
• Manage patients in remote monitoring and triage alerts.

Summary

Under limited supervision of the Director of Cardiac Device Clinic, the Cardiac Device nurse is independently accountable for the effective management and coordination of care of patient with Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device (CIED), pacemakers, ICD and Implantable Loop Recorders. The RN will partner with Cardiologists, Cardiology APPs and other clinical staff throughout ANTHC to coordinate the care of cardiovascular patients with CIEDs.

Responsibilities

• Conduct interviews with patient, family and other health care agencies to obtain past medical records and social and medical history to assess their understanding of the plan of care regarding cardiac monitoring device.
• Performs independently perform CIED interrogation and device/patient monitoring in the inpatient and outpatient setting, including MRI, ER per cardiology provider’s orders.
• Provides comprehensive patient care by accurately identifying malfunctions, alerts, and sub-optimal device operations along with clinical scenario and follow up appropriately with the patient and provider teams.
• Manage patient enrolled in remote monitoring services. Coordinate plan of care by triaging alerts and communicating with provider’s aligned nursing teams.
• Proactively review patient schedules to ensure efficiency in clinical workflows and identify and resolve potential conflicts.
• Ensure appropriate resources are available to support patient care and procedures in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Educate patient and family on signs and symptoms that require a follow up telephone call or clinic visit.
• Collaborate with medical faculty, nursing staff, and other health care agencies to facilitate patient and family needs.
• Assist with accurate date collection and analysis to support Device Clinic charting platform, national registries, process improvement and quality initiatives.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of Alaska Tribal Health System, ANTHC, and Alaska Native culture(s).
• Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures common to the cardiology department.
• Knowledge of basic anatomy and disease processes.
• Knowledge of how cardiac medications relate to cardiac device therapy.
• Knowledge of diagnostic EKG equipment, examination protocol and patient preparation for evaluation.
• Knowledge of policies and procedures for the care of patients.
• Knowledge of communication skills, both oral and written to interact with patients and families.
• Knowledge of function of single and dual chamber pacemakers, ICDs, and CRTs including timing cycles, upper rate behavior, rate responses sensors, and other special functions.
• Skill in performing EKG and ETT testing procedures.
• Skills in conducting CPR to include maintaining current BLS and ACLS certification.
• Skills to conducting a thorough pacemaker and/or ICD and/or Loop recorder device interrogation follow up.
• Skills in critically analyzing data obtained which would include analytically evaluating ECGs, analyzing atrial and ventricular EGMs, analyzing stored ICD data for appropriateness of therapy and troubleshooting problems.
• Skill in observing patients and taking appropriate action as needed.
• Skill in analyzing safety issues and preparing recommendations based on findings.
• Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Minimum Associate Nursing Degree (ASN).

Minimum Experience Qualification

Non-supervisory – Two (2) years of experience in a multiple cardiac setting – EP lab, Cardiac Cath lab or ICU. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

• Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Alaska.
• Basic Life Support Certification.
• ACLS Certification must obtain certification within six months of hire.

Preferred Education

Bachelor of Science – Nursing (BSN).

Preferred Experience Qualification

• Proficient in use of programmer: Abbott (formerly. Jude), Boston-Scientific, Medtronic and Bortnick.
• Proficient in use of remote monitoring websites/platform for remote device follow.

Preferred Certification Qualification

National certification in Certified Cardiac Device Specialist (CCDS) and/or other specialty specific certification.
