Job summary

Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY seeks a Patient Care Technician to join the Night shift in the Nursing Administration department. Under RN supervision, you will perform paraprofessional and technical functions contributing to safety, care, and comfort of adults and geriatric patients, including cardiac monitoring observation and equipment checks.

Responsibilities include patient care, hygiene, nutrition support, data collection, specimen handling, and assisting with treatment plans.

Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of Patient Care Technician training program, competency based orientation and Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • Graduate of state approved nursing assistant certificate program or 2 years experience as a direct care provider in a related clinical setting.
  • Ability to use patient care equipment such as sphygmomanometer, scales, pulse oximeter, isolettes, radiant warmer, telemetry monitoring/equipment.
  • Ability to perform technical procedures such as phlebotomy, EKG and bedside glucose monitoring.
  • Ability to operate pneumatic tube system.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English; and use unit equipment - fax, phone, communication system and maintenance equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care in a manner which supports the patient’s rights and dignity; initiates measures to provide for patient and family comfort.
  • Meets hygiene and grooming needs of patients; assists in meeting the fluid and nutritional needs of patients.
  • Provides and maintains a safe environment through preventive and intervention measures.
  • Assists patient with pulmonary toilet.
  • Provides care to patients requiring continuous electrical cardiac monitoring.
  • Collects patient data through observation, measurement, and data retrieval.
  • Obtains specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Performs technical skills as defined by scope of practice and competency assessment process.
  • Participates in the implementation of the treatment plan developed by the professional staff, patient, and family.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, and staff.
  • Ability to set priorities, problems solve, use proper judgment in difficult situations and assist in emergency situations.
  • Provides transportation services which support patient care activities.
  • Performs activities to maintain a clean, safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Performs general secretarial and clerical duties on the patient care unit.

Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse, assists the professional staff by performing a variety of paraprofessional and technical functions which contribute to the safety, care and comfort of adults and geriatric patients and their families. Provides direct and indirect patient care, technical skills and procedures, performs routine secretarial and clerical duties and participates in maintaining the environment. Provides continuous observation of cardiac monitor tracings of acute cardiac patients. Ensures proper functioning of cardiac monitoring equipment. Interprets and reports cardiac dysrhythmia and initiates emergency measures when potentially lethal dysrhythmia occur.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Successful completion of Patient Care Technician training program, competency basedorientation and Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • Graduate of state approved nursing assistant certificate programor 2 years experience as adirect care provider in a related clinical setting;or a combination of education and experienceacceptable to the Director of Nursing.
  • Ability to use of patient care equipmentsuch asbut not limited to, sphygmomanometer, scales, pulseoximeter, isolettes, radiant warmer, telemetry monitoring/equipment, patient care equipment.
