Job summary

Progress Rail, A Caterpillar Company in Sidney, NE is seeking a Railcar Technician to perform the removal, fabrication, fitment, and welding of railcar parts. The position offers a starting pay of $21.00/hr, with opportunities for bonuses and pay raises during the first year. Ideal candidates will have mechanical aptitude and the ability to work from blueprints and technical drawings. A High School diploma or GED is preferred, and candidates must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and work safely around heavy equipment.

Job Purpose

Removal, fabrication, fitment and welding of railcar parts, components and structures.

Compensation

Starting pay at $21.00/hr - Opportunity to take skills tests for pay raises at $0.25 each. (Six tests in first 90 days)

Education / Training

  • Work around and operate overhead cranes and mobile equipment
  • Work from heights over 6'
  • Work on varied surfaces (concrete floors, gravel, rail car floors)
  • Constant standing, walking
  • Frequent bending, crouching, stooping, kneeling, squatting, overhead reaching, climbing ladders
  • Must be able to push, pull and lift up to 50 lbs

Essential And Physical Activities Functions
  • Strength – Be able to push, pull or carry up to 50 lbs
  • Motion – Constant standing and walking; Frequent bending, crouching, stooping, kneeling, squatting, overhead reaching, climbing ladders; Frequent work below waist level and above shoulder level
  • Vision/Hearing Requirements – High noise levels (above 85 decibels)
  • Work Environment – Work from heights over 6', work on varied surfaces (concrete floors, gravel, rail car floors); Work around and operate overhead cranes and mobile equipment
  • Emotional Demands – Must be able to work alone and in team setting
  • Safety – This is a safety sensitive position. It requires work on and around rails and heavy equipment

Position requires strict adherence to safety policies (e.g. blue flag) and use of all PPE requirements such as hand, head, eye, ear and foot protection.
