Position Summary
The Captain of Training serves a dual role as both a key member of the SEMO University Police Department's command staff and leads the University Police Academy. This leadership position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of academy operations, ensuring compliance with POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) requirements, and driving innovation in recruit and in-service training.
Primary Responsibilities
- Manage daily operations of training and standards for the department, including scheduling, logistics, and resource management
- Supervise training staff, adjunct instructors, and support personnel
- Coordinate advanced training opportunities for departmental and regional personnel
- Develop and maintain CLEE-certified (Continuing Law Enforcement Education) curriculum and annual training calendar
- Serve as the POST-authorized Training Center Director or act under the Chief of Police in that role.
- Ensure curriculum development, instructional quality, and regulatory compliance for Policy Academy
- Collaborate with academic partners (e.g., Criminal Justice faculty) to integrate academy training with higher education pathways
- Lead strategic initiatives to evolve academy training methods, incorporating both tactical skills and human-centric competencies and integrate scenario-based, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive pedagogy
- Champion the academy's vision focusing on emotional intelligence, community engagement, and leadership development
- Actively participate in regional law enforcement networks and advisory boards
- Prepare reports, training metrics, and performance evaluations
- Maintain records for audit, accreditation, and funding purposes
- Ensure efficient use of training budgets and personnel allocations
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or related field (Master's degree a plus)
- Missouri POST certification as a law enforcement officer
- Progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including leadership and supervisory duties
- POST Generalist Instructor Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months
- Strong knowledge of law enforcement training standards, principles, and adult education techniques; experience leading a police academy or professional training program a plus
- Demonstrated knowledge and innovated approach to modern policing principles, techniques and practices
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation, verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to foster collaboration with university departments and external agencies.
- Demonstrates sound judgment in handling sensitive situations with tact, discretion, and confidentiality
- Ability to work evenings or weekends as needed
- Ability to travel regionally for training coordination and academy promotion.
- Commitment to providing outstanding customer service
