Job description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are responsible for coordinating, supervising, and directing correctional security programs in a state adult correctional facility.

Typical Functions

• Coordinates and supervises correctional security functions and activities at an adult correctional facility; may serve as a shift supervisor or as the chief of security in smaller facilities.
• Serves as commander of a correctional emergency response team; schedules training exercises and coordinates activities.
• Conducts special investigations related to incidents during assigned shifts.
• Coordinates and supervises security, riot, and escape procedures, including inmate counts and searches for escape materials and contraband.
• Prepares daily work schedules for security personnel; maintains records concerning employees and residents.
• Conducts inspections of staff at shift start to ensure proper attire and fitness for duty; inspects posts for maintenance; prepares operational reports.
• Acts as liaison to law enforcement agencies; provides information, updates files, and arranges court appearances.
• Participates in the formulation of institutional policies, rules, and regulations as a member of the administrative staff.

This level involves serving as a correctional security captain with overall responsibility for a shift within a medium or maximum-security facility, supervising staff, and ensuring the proper functioning of security systems and operational protocols. Responsibilities include directing emergency response teams and managing the facility after hours or in the absence of the warden.

Education And Experience

Requires four years of correctional or security work experience, and compliance with statutory requirements of Title 57, O.S. Section 510, including age, education, and training requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Competencies

Requires knowledge of supervisory methods, staffing, inmate behavior, use of firearms, restraint techniques, report writing, and prison management. Skills include establishing effective relationships, following instructions, quick evaluation, emergency response, and supervision.

Special Requirements

Applicants must be of good moral character, complete approved training, pass physical and drug tests, and be willing to work any shift. Additional requirements include valid driver’s license and compliance with background checks and certifications. Certain positions may be designated as peace officers, with specific legal and training requirements.
