Job description

NOW HIRING LATERAL TRANSFERS [EXPERIENCED LAW ENFORCEMENT (POST-CERTIFIED)] as well as new applicants

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

To protect and provide police services and general security at the State Capitol, annexes, properties contained therein, and adjacent state buildings, grounds, premises, and designated state properties against hazards such as trespass, theft, fire, and damage. Responsibilities include maintaining order, ensuring safety and security for the public, employees, and property, and performing related duties as required.

SUPERVISION:

Received: Works under the supervision of a superior Rhode Island Capitol Police officer, receiving detailed instructions and having work reviewed for efficiency and methods.

Exercised: Usually none.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Patrol the State Capitol and surrounding areas to detect and prevent hazards such as fire, theft, vandalism, and defacement.
  • Maintain peace, order, and make arrests when necessary.
  • Prevent trespassing, loitering, soliciting, and peddling on state properties.
  • Implement and maintain security protocols for state buildings.
  • Coordinate evacuations and operate security equipment to restrict unauthorized access.
  • Assist in developing security procedures and respond to threats and emergencies.
  • Gather intelligence, conduct threat assessments, and investigate incidents.
  • Interact with the public, provide information, and respond to emergencies with CPR/first aid as needed.
  • Check building security, direct traffic, and monitor parking.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies and prepare reports.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND CAPACITIES:

Knowledge of police tactics, patrolling, investigation, firearms, and emergency response. Ability to deal courteously with the public, keep records, analyze situations, and act effectively in emergencies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or GED; successful completion of the Rhode Island Capitol Police Training Academy.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Physically qualified (certificate required).
  • Background check, psychological evaluation, and medical clearance.
  • Ability to carry and qualify with service weapons.
  • Completion of Capitol Police training program.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • CPR/First aid certification every two years.
POST-CERTIFIED QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior law enforcement training from recognized agencies, successful completion of fitness, background, psychiatric, firearms, medical, and other assessments. Less seniority than non-POST-certified officers if hired concurrently during academy periods.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Details on the 2024 recruitment process, physical fitness tests, and medical certificates are available on the Rhode Island Capitol Police website. Candidates must provide a recent Medical Fitness Certificate to participate in physical tests. Successful candidates will need to pass written and physical tests to proceed.
