Job description

The Department of General Services is actively looking to hire a Maintenance Repairman 1 to undertake semi-skilled maintenance and groundskeeping tasks across the Capitol Complex and its surrounding facilities. This role involves a diverse range of responsibilities, including performing maintenance and repair work on various groundskeeping vehicles and equipment, particularly when assigned to the maintenance garage. The employee will play a crucial role in ensuring the aesthetic appeal and overall upkeep of the grounds, which encompasses gardens, trees, shrubbery, and lawn care, as well as managing snow and ice removal during winter months. If you are interested in contributing to the maintenance of these vital public spaces, we encourage you to apply today!

Essential employees are required to be available during emergencies and office closures. They operate a wide range of mechanized and motorized groundskeeping equipment, including but not limited to edgers, trimmers, various types of lawn mowers, tractors, leaf blowers, and snow blowers. These employees are responsible for reading and interpreting equipment manuals, performing necessary repairs and adjustments, and ensuring the proper maintenance of tools and machinery. They report any significant repair needs to their supervisor for further action. In addition to equipment management, essential employees engage in the fertilization, seeding, and sodding of lawn areas, as well as maintaining gardens through activities such as cutting, watering, edging, and trimming. They prepare planting areas for a diverse array of trees, shrubs, and flowers, and are tasked with trimming and pruning as needed, including the removal of trees and heavy branches when required.

Furthermore, these employees are responsible for weeding, cultivating, and applying necessary soil amendments like peat moss and tanbark to established beds and shrub areas. They prepare soil for planting by spading, digging, and incorporating fertilizers and other soil enhancers. Essential employees also operate light vehicles, including jeeps and pickup trucks, to transport equipment and materials, ensuring that these vehicles are cleaned and maintained. They monitor the exterior of the Capitol Complex and surrounding buildings, removing litter, trash, and debris from various areas, including sidewalks and parking lots, while also emptying designated outdoor trash containers. Additionally, they manage irrigation systems across the Capitol Complex, ensuring that areas such as the East Wing and Judicial buildings receive adequate water supply. During special outdoor events, essential employees assist with setup by arranging seating, erecting barriers, and providing additional waste disposal options, while also handling cleanup duties afterward. They are also responsible for retrieving deceased animals, such as birds and rodents, from the grounds to maintain a clean and safe environment.
