Job summary

The Oklahoma Indigent Defense System seeks a full-time Capital Counsel in its Capital Defenders Division. Office locations include Norman or Sapulpa. Provides legal representation in capital cases with ABA guidelines. Requires JD and Oklahoma Bar admission; travel may be required.

Minimum annual salary starts at $70,000 and will be set according to qualifications and the agency salary schedule.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate and active bar admission in Oklahoma.
• Experience in capital cases is preferred.
• Familiarity with ABA Guidelines for Death Penalty Counsel (1989).

Responsibilities

• Performs case management until case conclusion or reassignment.
• Communicates with client to keep informed decisions on representation.
• Interacts with client's friends/family within privacy limits.
• Conducts investigations relating to guilt and penalty phase.
• Prepares for trial including pretrial motions and plea strategy.
• Researches law to brief motions and arguments.
• Prepares for jury selection and questions for voir dire.
• Assists with post-judgement proceedings and appellate issues.
• Serves as Co-Counsel as assigned and provides staff support.
